One more reason (as if you needed one) to love makeup

08 February 2016, 17:32Lynn Butler

Don't believe everything you hear, people always say. Yet how many of us blindly follow outdated rules, purely on face value? We did some research and found that many popular beauty rules are in fact pure myth.

1.    Putting Vaseline on your face prevents wrinkles

Vaseline or petroleum jelly is a super strong moisturiser, as it forces oils into your skin and prevents them from evaporating. According to CNN, Vaseline can help diminish your wrinkles, because it softens your lines, but come on people, nothing can completely remove or prevent wrinkles.

2.    Wearing make-up every day is bad for your skin

Believe it or not, but make-up is actually beneficial to your skin, as it forms a barrier between our skin and the environment. Some cosmetic products have drug-like properties, thanks to their antioxidants that can repair and improve your skin. According to Hexjam, you should just remove your makeup properly in the evening before bed and you should be fine.

3.    Applying lots of moisturiser after sunburn

You shouldn't actually do this since the moisturiser will actively trap the heat inside your skin, which will cause prolonged pain. According to Hexjam, one must be careful to use proper after-sun products that hydrate and soothe your skin. The best healing ingredient is Aloe Vera.

4.    Lip balm makes your lips drier

There is a truth to this, as Marie Clarie reports that certain lip balms contain ingredients such as camphor, menthol and alcohol that can irritate and dry our lips out. Yet, most lip balms won't do this. Rather opt for an all-lanolin balm or Vaseline.

5.   Wearing nail polish all the time will make your nails yellow

Not all nail polishes cause discolouration of the skin. According to Fox News, our nails absorb the pigment of the nail polish, especially darker colours like red. To avoid this, it is recommended that you apply a clear base coat first.
