#ThrowbackThursday: Twitter asks, ‘Do you remember Planta?’

Lagos – Today on Twitter, a strange word was trending – Planta. Those who are old enough were wondering why something as random as a spread they put on their bread was a hot topic, while most of Twitter’s audience were asking the question: ‘What is planta?’

Twitter user Dow Jones began the conversation with the tweet:

Which was followed by the young masses on Twitter who commented with:

To answer their question, Planta was a margarine brand that was made by Unilever from vegetable oil. It was widely used in many cuisines and baking products.

However in 1960, many people got ill and two people died from eating Planta margarine in the Netherlands, and the cause was said to be the new additive in the margarine.


According to Twitter user, Min. Gbenro Ogundipe, Blue Band is Nigeria’s current version of Planta:
