What if your partner has a work spouse?

12 October 2016, 10:03Shakila Alivitsa

Abuja - I think people that have partners who work independently or own their own businesses feel pretty good about their marriage/ relationship.

At least that is one stress out of the equation; no colleagues to be worrying about and if they are actually late at work, you do not have to actually think about it.

Because to be honest other than all outside causes that cause marriages and relationships to fall apart, the colleagues at work play an important role.

That is why husbands are always telling wives to quit jobs just because a certain male colleague is too familiar. That is why wives are always stalking their husbands at work.

The work spouse- it is actually a thing.

It can be innocent and then there is that other one that develops into something less innocent.

Imagine this, they spend even more time with your spouse more than you do; 5-6 days a week for 8-9 hours a day if we are playing with the lesser figures. They actually see and talk to your spouse more than you do.

This is a relationship that develops from the basic fact that they feel this person understands them. Try explaining to your spouse who is not in your industry why a certain strategy cannot work and why you think another will. They look dumb not understanding while this colleague is interested, keen, and giving ideas; now they are thinking, ‘wow, intelligent and smart. I relate more with this person than I do with my spouse. They don’t get it’

You eventually stop talking to the spouse about issues you face every day and cannot wait to have breakfast with this colleague. When was the last time you had simple lunch with your own spouse? But cannot wait to go get a sandwich for your colleague. While your spouse might not even have any plans.

That is how a work spouse relationship starts and develops to grow into something more. Your partner looks forward to spending more time and meeting them more as compared to even spending a full weekend with you. They do not even mind the unpaid overtime because they enjoy the casual conversation with their colleague while busy at work as compared to coming home and watching you watch your favourite stuff.

If you really care about your relationship/ marriage, learn about the balance of such relationships so that it will not eventually cause distraction.
