You are not wife material if you wear make up

06 September 2016, 15:05Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi - Apparently!

On my very long journeys to that diaspora I come from I have to find something to do because I don’t trust myself to sleep in a matatu. So normally, I will have enough You Tube videos on makeup. I enjoy seeing the transformations and I have noticed I am not the only one; everyone around me is normally watching them with me- especially the men.

Most pretend to actually not be watching but this guy sat comfortably beside me and decided to spark a conversation with me about it.

His first question was, how long does that take? I explained it depends with what you want. If it is a full face, that can take up to an hour, if it is something basic, maybe 30min but what most women do is the basic one.

He goes back to watch it and then he comments, ‘this woman is not wife material.’ So I ask him why he would say so.

‘Who will serve me tea when she is spending half the time being late putting on all those things?’ I wanted to ask him where his hands and mouth would have gone to (and what their functioning had to do with the wife) but decided to go with his train of thought and asked, ‘what if the maid has already made the tea and you just have to take it. The maid makes it either way.’

He tells me he is old school and the wife has to serve him tea but he is not done, he had more issues. ‘Won’t she make us late because she is doing all that? Even if I let her go into the bathroom first or we even share (he had to add this one) she will still be late. I cannot marry such a woman, she does not have her priorities straight. ‘Who will prepare the kids for school when she barely has time to prepare herself?’

So I go another way, ‘What does it have to do with you? It is her face, if it is about being late I am sure you can leave her behind if you want or she can actually wake up earlier and if it is spending, what if it is her own money?’

‘She is still not marriageable to me. Can you imagine when she washes her face in the evening? What if she hugs you and smears everything on you?’

The woman also had the fancy manicure, so he comments on how she cannot even wash clothes. ‘Who would want to marry such a woman? He continues in a tirade and tells me that believe it or not because I said, that is how women are these days he will have to deal with it.

He tell me, ‘Believe it or not, there are actually some women who still want to make a better life. At this point I was wondering what this better life was and he tells me, have a home, kids and a man.

‘So, if I am wearing face paint it means I cannot have kids?’ He laughs because I was smirking and he asks if I am wearing any. I said yes but he was okay with mine because it was not that obvious or because he was just trying not to offend me.

Moral of the story; if you are a woman and you paint your face and have talons on your fingers you are not eligible for marriage. It somehow relates. I will do some further research and get back to you guys!
