Akpabio charges youth on developing sporting talents

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has called on Akwa Ibom youths to partake more in the sports industry, thanking NNPC and MPN for the platform they have given to every Akwa Ibom child to exhibit  their talents on sports and called on other companies to always give back to the society from which they operate.

Akpabio made the call at the closing ceremony of the 14th Akwa Ibom state, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) school athletics championship, held over the weekend.

Congratulating the winners at the Ibom International stadium, Akpabio said " I congratulate the winners of this competition for doubling up efforts to emerge as this year winner, I must also congratulate other competitors from other zones who also participated and I urge them to see this competition as a bedrock to future stardom".

"My administration has given an Akwa Ibom child the opportunity to be what he wants to be, which was why we were very much interested in the education sector by introducing the free and compulsory education for all children resident in the state, so on the sport sector, we have provided enabling facilities to develop potential talents in sports", he declared

Speaking earlier, the Chairman and Managing director of Mobil producing Nigeria (MPN) Mr. Molan O' Neal, who was represented by the General manager, Public and Government  Affairs, Mr. Paul Arinze said it is the company pride in using sports to develop both the state and country, disclosing that the competition over the years had discovered great talents from the state that has represented both the state and country in other countries.

He also disclosed that the competition is based on discovering new talents, engaging the young ones positively and a way of making sure that the oil and gas from the state touches the progress and economy of the state.

Arinze, then thanked the state governor for making the facilities of the stadium available for the children of the state and country.

Also speaking, the group General manager of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Joseph Dawha represented by the deputy Manger, community development, Julie Utang, said the competition is a committed joint venture by NNPC and MPN to touch states and the country in providing health care, water supply, roads, infrastructural, human and community development.

She then thanked the state government in taking particular interest in sports and providing magnificent edifice of the state international stadium to sport lovers.

The competition which comprises of students from 8 zones namely Abak, Eket, Etinan, Ikot-Ekpene, Ibiono Ibom, Ikot Abasi, Oron and Uyo zones, who participated in a march past and athletic games such as 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters relay race, among others.
