It is not an exaggeration to say that the saying “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop” has remained true in the lives of many youths. The saying has unarguably find expression in the lives of many gullible and pliable youths, particularly when they are jobless, observing strike actions embarked upon by lecturers or when they are hopefully waiting to secure admission into various institutions of learning in the country or abroad.
Given the gullible and pliable dispositions of many youths, especially during the period when their minds can be said to be idle, the devil is wont to spiritually take an undue advantage of their idleness by literally pushing them into crimes and vices.
The is no denying the fact that it is when any youth is seen by the devil to be in an idle situation that he is wont to literally build a workshop in the mind of such youth and begin to dwell therein purposely to have a mischievous opportunity of manipulating his victim with all sorts of ill-advised activities like political thuggery, kidnapping, gansterism, hooliganism, “Boko Haramism” and what have you.
I must confess at this juncture that this piece is not an exegetical piece that is written to expose the wiles of the devil. But it is the writer’s view on how the devil manipulates the youths in their state of idleness to achieve his evil objectives and how he can be checkmated by the youths themselves, the governments at all levels, political leaders, parents and other categories of institutions and individuals that have concern for the well-being of the youths by taking some practical steps before they begin to sanctimoniously talk about prayers. From a spiritual perspective, many deliverance pastors in the Christendom would unanimously agree that the devil’s workshop that is literally built in the mind of any youth can only be closed or demolished by “fire prayer and fasting”. However, this writer differs in this context as he is of the view that more practical results would be achieved in literally closing down the workshops which the devil has built in the minds of many youths across the country when all that are concerned for the well being of the youths should roll up their sleeves and get to work.
According to the bible in the book of James chapter 2 verse 22 that says “Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? Simply put, the foregoing scripture suggests that there are issues of life that need to be addressed by work, particularly when combined with prayers. In this context, one of the works that need to be carried out to literally close down devil’s workshops in the minds of many youths Is to establish standard and well-stocked libraries across all the 774 local governments headquarters in the country. The need to take this practical step in ensuring that the minds of the youths are intellectually engaged through reading would no doubt make Francis Bacon’s quote that “Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man” more meaningful in the lives of the youths.
Another work that need to be carried out in order to literally close down devil’s workshops in the minds of some youths is for the federal government to inject more blood into National Directorate of Employment and refocus it towards the training of unemployed youths who could not secure white collar jobs to enable them acquire entrepreneurial skills that are needed to make them become more relevant to the growth of the economy. This can be achieved by equipping them with technical and business skills by giving them opportunities to acquire industrial experience from successful multinational and indigenous companies. With this, the government would be able to make the youths to have a practical understanding and application of their education and training in the workplace.
As it is proverbially said, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” By virtue of this saying, I am of the opinion that the building of parks or playgrounds that are equipped with recreational facilities across the country would literally hasten up the closure of devil’s workshops in the minds of the youths. In the same nexus, video viewing centres where mind building films and documentaries would be shown to youths during weekends can be established in each ward across the country. One may not be wrong to say that some readers of this piece may begin to see the suggestions made in this context as pipe dream.
To me, all the suggested youth-centred projects are feasible only when the federal government through the ministry of youth development would partner with both state and local governments, politicians and non-governmental organizations. Finally, workshops which the devil have literally constructed in the minds of most youths can be closed permanently by leaders who understand the scriptural injunction in James chapter 2 verse 24 that says “Ye see them how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only”.
