21 May 2014, 12:13 Harrison Mbungu

The government has embarked on the fight against climate change related disasters by drafting a climate change draft policy and bill aimed at providing proper preparedness strategy.

The draft policy and bill which aims at facilitating effective climate change response is on its final stages of draft before being taken to the national assembly for adoption. Speaking in a consultative meeting on climate change policy and bill at a hotel in Mombasa, the national assembly committee on environment and natural resources chairman Amina Abdalla, said the government has embarked on a development framework and a climate change policy.

In the meeting, which was also attended by the parliamentary and senate committees on environment and natural resources, Abdalla said the draft bill will also see the objectives of low carbon climate change resilient achieved by the government. “The ministry has established a multi stakeholder taskforce with representatives from the government, private sector and civil society organizations to spearhead the development of the policy and provide inputs to the climate change bill currently under consideration by the National assembly, “Said Abdalla.

Scientific study shows that Kenya is among the countries which are greatly affected by the climate change, said Richard Lesiyampe, the principal secretary in the environment and natural resources ministry.  He said in order to combat the climate change related disasters Kenya needs to establish a proper strategy to adapt on the changes. “Individual and cooperate action is needed to address the problems brought about by climate change, we need to establish a policy as a government to reduce climate change disasters,” he added. Lesiyampe listed agricultural fishing and wildlife sectors among the most affected by the change of climate which he said needed a thorough government intervention.
