Even as we welcome our First Lady

23 October 2012, 11:55

After several weeks of suspense, news and counter news, our dear First Lady Patience Dame Jonathan finally arrived in Nigeria from Germany amidst so much paparazzi. As expected, she was welcomed by party faithfuls, women groups, her loyalists as well as government officials who abandoned their official duties for this unofficial welcome they considered more important. The Nnamdi Azikiwe airport wasn't left out as they had all kinds of banners and posters welcoming their 'Mummy'.

As much as the welcome party is allowed, even though I know a large number of the well-wishers came to pay their fair share of eye service, I must state that it is a shame that people will abandon their primary assignment for such frivolity.

What major landmark is being celebrated that attracted such publicity? As if it is not bad enough that she was flown abroad due to some form of illness which of course further puts a stamp on the decadence of our health system. Thought she would have come in quietly and saved herself the media attention but I forgot that we are quite shameless and can't even be bothered that the world is laughing at our folly.

She has also publicly denied reports regarding her health saying she was neither ill, have got no terminal disease nor went for the popular 'tummy tuck' but that she went on vacation as she needed the holiday. Please tell me what first lady goes on holiday for endless weeks, especially one who doubles as a permanent secretary in her state? When did Germany become a vacation hot spot? How come we heard several news of her come back only to be aborted over and again? Was the vacation that sweet that she kept postponing her date so she could catch more fun? The Patience I know would have ensured pictures of her vacation was flooded everywhere in the media just to prove a point if indeed she was on vacation.

Even if we are so stupid to swallow such vacation lie hook line and sinker, she further shot herself in the leg when she said "Thank God for giving me second chance" I mean what second chance are you thankful for since you were supposedly on vacation? I thought she was meant to be thanking God for a refreshing time considering the fact that we are simple enough to believe her cock and bull story.

I'm only just afraid for a country where even the leaders are not bold enough to tell us the truth no matter the cost.

I am ashamed of a country where people will steal and take the loot abroad, they will send their children to school abroad, go abroad for medical check up but when they die, they bring their bodies home as if Nigeria is the dumping ground.
