If you like, call it political opportunism or whatever name you feel is the best. However, the fact remains that the recent visit to Governors Sule Lamido and Rabiu Kwankwaso by General Muhammadu Buhari and other top notchers of the All Progressive Congress marks a new turning point in the nation's political domain.
The strategy mapped out by the APC to woo the aggrieved governors into the APC was informed by the lingering internal crisis bedeviling the PDP.Indeed, the PDP crisis is unprecedented and leaves much to be desired interms of political brouhaha. As the crisis is deepening by the day without an absolute resolution in sight, there is more to the problem than solution due to the complexity of the unfolding events.
At this point, one can draw a simple logic that the emerging political drama scenes are a sign that 2015 is fast drawing nearer and gathering momentum.Between now and 2015,political gladiators characterised by the strong
desire to capture power especially at the central level will fight like a lion and spend sleepless nights to make their dream come true.
Nobody needs to be told that President Goodluck Jonathan is very enthusiastic for power just like many incumbent leaders and he seems to firmly remain defiant of the strongest opposition against his re-election bid.Already, the obnoxious machinery he sets in motion to elongate his power is making the PDP to fall apart.
In this emerging crisis, two extreme points are prominent. There is the point of convergence on one hand and the point of divergence on the other hand. When the going was fine and okay, the PDP was a house of convergence for people drawn from multi-faceted ideologies. It registered the leftists, rightists, liberals, conservatives and what have you.But as fate would have it,the same convergence has been transformed into divergence, the PDP having lost 7 governors and
a proportional number of lawmakers.
The convergence is taking a new dimension.Like in the PDP,the current APC is also a conglomeration of diverse political ideologies. This new convergence method, according to its proponents,is aimed at saving the nation. The convergence move is actually exciting because Governor Sule Lamido and General Muhammadu Buhari who were hitherto at the point of divergence now seem to bury their differences.
If the convergence of G7 and APC really works wonders, can it actually save the nation?According to Abraham Lincoln,'for every selfish politician there is a dedicated leader'.In the context of Nigeria, selfishness in politics is the order of the day. Many politicians deploy deceptive means to achieve their political goals
.A typical example here is the manipulation of religion or ethnicity. In the same vein, dedicated leaders who possess leadership qualities are in our midst but find it very difficult to grab the mantle of leadership. For Buhari,Lamido,Kwankwaso in particular, dedication is part and parcel of their political character. For instance,Buhari is a sound character whose messianic appeal has reached a high proportion.Governor Sule Lamido is a leader whose incredible political will has revolutionised Jigawa State.Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso's dedication is changing the face of Kano. Despite this seeming political advantage the APC and G7 may have, there is however the danger of political opportunists.
Thus,it is not the convergence that really matters. But also worthy of reflecting is the pragmatic results the proposed convergence will produce. In other words, the concept of convergence is one thing. Its development is another thing and the dividends are what the nation hopes to gain.
