Game, stands for so many sport activities that brings unity, laughter, smiles, joy and happiness. Last week as it was a terrible week for everyone who watches football and that watched the Eagle's match against the Republic of Iran. And for other countries like England, Australia, Spain and so on, who could not win a single game in the on-going FIFA World Cup in Brazil, it was terrible for their fans.
Nigerians had earlier criticised the method adopted by their players; the mentality of playing draw with all their counterparts. But 19 June 2014, marked a new era for them. I vividly remembered that the coach of the Super Eagles had earlier criticised the style of play of his striker, Osaze Odemwinge who plays football in the English Premier League, Stoke-City.
The coach words were; 'he did not play to instructions as I instructed him'. Osaze came in at 75 minutes to the end of the game against Iran that was determine for a draw and of which they picked up. But the excitement of the game picked off when this young man called Osaze got in although the game ended up goalless.
The second game on the 19th of June 2014, had now seen the first World Cup win of the Super Eagles of Nigeria since 1998. But who made that happen? The stone that the builders rejected has turned to corner stone for the people of the great country called Nigeria.
Football, carries weight, heavy one for that matter. I saw what the win brought to so many Nigerians; Joy, happiness, smiles, laughter, unity. Igbo's, yoruba's, hausa's, everyone joined and sat in one compound just as like one family watching the match together. It was an amazing atmosphere. If only everyone in this country could adopt the spirit of sportsmanship, definitely it will unite us all. God bless the Eagles for bringing smiles to the people of Nigeria. God bless us all.
