"Girlie o, for so long I've waiting ooo...blah blah blah".
Well, I'm a great fan of the Nigerian hip hop nonsense because there's nothing else the radio gives me. But this particular song by Patoranking really got me thinking. The theme of the song was focused on domestic violence especially as it concerns women. I really enjoyed both the song, the concept of the video and the message it carried.
Female domestic violence is an everyday occurrence in our society but we just decide to wave it off as a personal matter.
"Is it not the girl that accepted the guy in the first place? Let her endure it all."
"If the man beats you, beg him and dedicate all to God in prayers."
We have taken a lackadaisical stand on an issue that involves every woman in our society today. Men see women as punching bags because in their own words; "these ladies must be adjusted and re-adjusted from time to time in order to behave well". And everytime I hear something like this, I'm fast to ask the man who will correct him in case he misbehaves. Women endure and stay in marriages in spite of the abuses because of what the society and other women will say. Ladies allow guys to beat them up like WWF because they "love" the sycophant who showcases more of his stupidity than his ambition.
Ladies on their own part contribute in no small measure to this rising trend especially among young adults. Patoranking's song and the video is just a perfect definition of this act and I hope everyone will watch that video and learn from it...positively. (And please, don't watch the remix. Tiwa Savage's performance will certainly invoke another thing inside of you). Young men must learn to respect ladies and keep their temper in check.
Shun the person!
Avoid the person!
Do anything it takes not to get in contact with the person but please, don't lift a hand to hit the eve.
For the Eves',your stupidity is legendary and we all know that quite well. "Una tongue dey wag like sumtin wey no go stop till death". In as much the Adams try to keep their temper in check, the eves must try and control their tongue and whatever that may "necessitate" a man to hit her. As for me,I will simply look at you,say a brief prayer in my mind both for me and you. Because if I don't do that,we may end up pouring aspersions on each other.
It is hard I know, but it can be done. It we get to the Promised Land,I shall be waiting for when you will pass me a glass of water and thank God for the gift of grace for the race.
