But recently, bank robbery shifted to a more perfect, easier and far simpler mode. It results in robbers requiring no complicated plans, taking no risk or wasting any time training to use guns.
The good news is this reduces the regularity of armed robbery. Or, why will reasonable robbers, carry out tedious raid, risking their lives only to rob empty banks?
Are you wondering why Nigerian banks are empty?
First, the banks are empty because the clients could not trust its security devices to protect their money.
Banking system was introduced in Nigeria in 1892. Yet, many prominent people still pay no particular attention to banks. People, probably by pure ignorance or for lack of trust, would not risk the use of any bank safety box.
So, they keep their precious belongings in strange places.
And in recent past, a man was arrested over a storehouse, full of foreign currency.
And the news of Madam is still fresh. She transformed her servant’s room to a cash depot, where $700 million was discovered.
Tell me of what use are the banks to such people?
Secondly, banks are receiving less cash deposit for an obvious reason.
Who will keep his precious belongings with people who transformed Nigeria’s vibrant banks to failed banks? The mere thought of turning over our precious properties to such people is terrifying. Or who will keep his money with men who for the sake of making more money throw away good manners?
We have learnt from a reliable source that “banks don’t fail.” Bank only get robbed by those supposed to keep it safe and secure.
The bad news is the result of such robbery is more dreadful. The robbers are unhindered by any security devices and being more dangerous, our savings are less secure.
And, strangely too, we are witnessing an unimaginable and worrisome transformation. This new era robbers outshine the former. They gain great favour and all-round support in the society even among great teachers who taught us on the pulpits not to be “vain in robbery.”
But in life, our holy ones become friends of thieves as they set robbers in high places, on purported holy grounds, thus clearly disregarding the Master’s Word which says, “Give not that which is holy unto the dogs.” Now, hiding under this universal cover of approval, robbers freely commit dreadful crimes. Practically, without taking any serious risk, they do deep damages.

In addition, there is a clear distinction between the former and the new set of robbers, especially when arrests are made.
Nigeria is probably the only place where policemen are used to protect lawbreakers and where a robber who makes away with less than ten thousand dollars gets life sentence and one who pilfers more than two billion dollars gets only house arrest or escapes judgment perfectly.
We are told to trust our judiciary system. But the judgment or sentence must correspond to the offence. This could only happen when those who run the judiciary and especially the judges conduct their affairs with Integrity of heart.
And the Police, also, with the chief duty to protect life and property do their duty with honesty without offering robbers help or support.
In all, poverty doesn’t make a man to rob his neighbours. For, a poor person is better desired, than a robber. And, “a good name is rather to be chosen than,” a houseful of silver and gold.
What then can we do?
Imagine Nigerians, from all walks of life regain the former understanding, repent or turn away from setting our hope on the deceitfulness of riches and decide to be honest at all cost. Imagine we decide to struggle to make good names, rather than make money by all means. And supposing we seek peace and pursue it.
Then, our nation would be among the greatest. For our people, though suffering silently, are still smiling. They are not just the happiest but also among the most intelligent on the planet. Yet, presently, our intelligence seems configured for crimes.
But we can change this configuration. We can be temperate in our desire for money. We can desire honesty, seek to do good and hate evil. This is the sure solution to insecurity, bank robbery and all kinds of evil.
