When discussing the political walls and halls of Nigeria one person that must be mentioned is Senator Rufai Hanga. He is one practical politician who knows where the bones of Nigerian politics are buried, having crisscrossed the political strata of this country. He was once a member of the House of Representatives, a senator and party chairman.
The pioneer National Chairman of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has also fought several battles, resulting in his jumping from one party to another, which, incidentally, many hold against him. From ANPP, CPC to PDM and now PDP, Senator Hanga would have made a good career as a long and high jump athlete, and that he compensates for in politics.
He recently spoke to the Abuja Metro on political issues, including the state of the National Assembly, the Senator who say Tinubu and Buhari are like fox and rabbit, said why Gen. Muhamadu Buhari (rtd.) cannot win the presidential election, how northern governors have failed their people and the viable solution to tackle Boko Haram insurgency.
Life outside National Assembly
Life outside the National Assembly has made me happier. I left the National Assembly when it was very good and doing fine before it became very inglorious. Honestly, the National Assembly has derailed because so many things are happening now that ought not to happen.
I am sure that if it is now that President Olusegun Obasanjo attempted to go for third term, he would have had his way. I insist that the National Assembly is now very inglorious. However, I did not return to the National Assembly basically because I fell out with the governor then. My then governor, Ibrahim Shakarua had disagreement with Buhari and I decided to join forces with Buhari in fighting my governor. In the Nigerian political terrain, it is only a mad man that can fight with his governor and attempt to contest any election let alone senate.
Now I realize that I did it ignorantly. Joining Buhari to fight my governor will remain one of my greatest regrets. If I had stayed with my governor, I would have earned so much respect and recognition because I realized that Shakarau is such a gentleman. I regretted aligning with Buhari especially as he did not recognize my efforts. He dumped me as he did too many other people that suffered for him.
Lost CPC ownership battle
I lost the battle because of the Nigeria factor. People had to even threaten that they would complete the merger with or without the original CPC certificate in my possession. And true to their words, they did it.
I did not continue fighting the registration battle because I am a strong believer in the judgment of God, people and posterity in whatever we do. I am still waiting for the judgment day. I was threatened, bullied and betrayed but I left everything to God. Let time be the best judge.
The merger APC
Initially, I wanted the merger but when I saw the handwriting on the wall, I even advised them to back-out of it because it is not a merger but acquisition. It was an acquisition because the other parties were swallowed up and there is nothing they can do about it now. They realised too late and all those clamouring for Buhari would have to go and leak their wounds now.
APC is more evil than PDP because the atrocities people accuse PDP in many years of existence has been doubled by the APC in few years of its existence. People blame PDP out of ignorance because PDP is not a human being or a monster but a vehicle driven by reckless drivers that went on rampage and caused multiple accidents. Some of these drivers abandoned the vehicle called PDP and moved into a new vehicle called APC.
Are there Chances for Buhari?
We will have to wait and see but it is clear that Buhari has no chance of becoming the president of Nigeria. If he has the chance, he is okay but he has some weakness known to many people. One of the weaknesses is those innocent decisions he takes. He is in a deep shit because he does not have party structure. They formed all the structures but I don’t think he got even a messenger in the new party structure. He has serious disadvantage among Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar for the ticket. No matter what he does, he will not win APC ticket in free and fair primaries because he does not have the structure.
The Union between Buhari and Tinubu
The relationship between Tinubu and Buhari is that of a fox and a rabbit. While Buhari is a very innocent politician, Tinubu is a very smart intelligent fox who knows what he wants, where he is coming from and where he is going. Every layman knows that it is easy for Tinubu to outsmart Buhari in picking the APC presidential ticket.
The sojourn of PDM
I initially thought that PDM would be the best option but I unfortunately discovered that the party is just another fraud. I have certainly made a rethink. Regardless of the situation prevalent in all the parties, my mind will never tilt towards joining APC.
I can’t join APC because there are so many things very personal I have against the party. APC is very powerful in propaganda, blackmail and pull-down syndrome and deployment of sentiment. I remain a politician and decided to join PDP after consulting.
The 2015 and Goodluck Jonathan
Nothing is actually impossible in politics. I can campaign for Jonathan if I have the reason to do so especially if I am consulted. Let me tell you that I know those I can campaign for and those I cannot in PDP and in APC. For example in APC, one person I think my conscience will not allow me to campaign for is Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso because he is not good for president of Nigeria. Gov. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is one among the aspirant for the seat of the number one man in Aso Rock under the merger party of the APC.
“He is my governor but it will do disservice to my nation to support or campaign for him as a president because I know he lacks presidential quality. States in northern Nigeria are just like rural areas and being a rural governor does not qualify him to be the president of Nigeria.
He lacks the sophistication, the qualification, awareness, competence, spread, connection and soberness to manage Nigeria. He is just a local champion who became the governor by accident. I know so much about Kwankwaso, some I heard from people, and many I know very well personally. People outside Kano will hail him ignorantly but those of us that know him very well can tell you that he is not and exactly what he is. As an individual I can’t actually vouch for his competent in leadership. Many people believe he did much damage to Kano and the north more than any other politician.
Those who have these impressions have their reasons. He is now lord of manor in Kano because we have sycophants ready to worship his position and any position. But let us wait and see what will happen when he leaves office. He is now very powerful but will soon be lame duck and also face the reality just one month after leaving office. Yes, one of the legacies Kwankwaso usually boasts of is building some cities in Kano like the Kwankwsia, Amana and others. In fairness to him, they are massive structures, but people say the projects are not actually straight as the public think. The houses are not for the masses but the high-class who can afford to buy for a price tag of N45 million.
During his first tenure, he built two estates but the price was too high that nobody bought them until he decided to give it to his allies, forgetting that he used pensioners’ money to build them, leaving them to die on the streets. It was Shekarau who sold them and paid the pensioners.
The streetlights he claimed to have done were at outrageous price. Again, most northerners feel that he was the person former President Obasanjo used to retire all the northern top brass in the military.
Senator assessing northern governors
Just like Kwankwaso, all the other northern governors have equally failed the north woefully. Most of them don’t spend 20 per cent of what they get. They have failed in many areas and I don’t want to begin to enumerate here since they are very obvious.
Solution to insurgency
The first practical solution is for the government to collaborate with the people. There is a lot of campaign of calumny and propaganda against the government. Incidentally, people around government are not doing enough to counter the campaigns. People will hear 10 things against the government yet they won’t do much to counter the information. Opposition is good, but not the kind we have now, which is very injurious to nationhood. Some opposition politicians are going beyond the limit that is even becoming anti people. Government must be more proactive in fighting insurgency. Boko Haram has reduced Nigeria to mere chicken because we don’t have the weapon to counter the insurgency.
It will be wrong to single out only the northern elite for blame concerning the insurgency. The entire Nigeria elite should share from the blame because they contributed in many ways.
Southerners made more money when northern leaders were in power. More northerners ruled the country yet there is poverty prevalent in the north more than the south because northern leaders were very selfish. They did not just do well for the north. They allowed ignorance and poverty to grow like a tree.
