After eight years of accepting defeat and the eventual
return to power in 2011 by Engr. (Dr.) Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso with his Deputy,
Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, it was left with no doubt that real work will begin
in Kano, and today, the result is the Kwankwasiyya Ideology. But should this
focused people-oriented ideology of administration like that of Kwankwaso and
Ganduje end in 2015 without comprehensively completing what they started?

Deputy Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in an interview with The Union Correspondent
has these profound the answers. Your Coming Back Our coming is very interesting
because we won elections in 1999 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic
Party until 2003 when we lost to the ANPP. Even though the lost pained us, we
knew the sentiments behind the whole thing, I mean the elections in 2003, that
Obasanjo as a Christian contesting for the second term, he continue being the
President of Nigeria, and the issue of Shari’a was also around, the Shari’a
which we inaugurated and managed the best way we thought it should be managed.
But some people believed that the shari’a was going to institute a kind of new
religion to the people and therefore, we lost the elections. However, we were
not deterred by the defect, but we continued to work very hard. As politicians,
we were committed to assist the people of Kano with developmental projects.
Interestingly, in 2011, we contested elections and returned to the Government
House. So you can see the effect of the eight years. We had eight years in
harmonization, rescheduling of our plans, eight years to articulate the needs
of the people of Kano state and eight years of planning how to improve the
status of Kano State, which gave us a blueprint of all the developments
witnessed in Kano State today. What Describes the Gov. Kwankwaso’s
Administration? The Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso-led administration can be
described with these beautiful adjectival; it is focused, transparent, a
government led by an achiever, a visionary, and a leader with foresight.
such a leader who believes that charity begins at home and Nigeria as a nation
can be developed. As such, he started this development in Kano State in order
to model a good structure of development for the country. Achievements so far I
know it is a collective efforts, but first of all the glory must go to the
leader, because he is the light that shines which enables the various
programmes, policies and projects succeed today. In the area of social
development, we succeeded in banning street begging, child hard labour,
promulgated a statute for mass marriage of widows and widowers and equally
provide empowerment's for thousands of youths and women in the state. On
critical infrastructures, if you look at the road network of the present Kano
state, it will tell anyone within and outside the state that we have done well.
The flyovers, underpass-ways with rehabilitation of many roads, both in the
rural areas, provision of street lights, adequate water supply for drinking,
healthcare facilities and also making of some policies to maintain some social
issues as I stated earlier. And to crown it all, education is made free by us
so that no child will be deprived of been educated in order to educate others
to bring a perfect economic and politically society. What will make people
return you as the Governor of the state? I must tell you that our achievements
so far have spoken for us. The people see good reasons to cooperate with us.
Many have given us their support for continuity of the government so that we can
complete what we have yet not completed. I am proud to say that anywhere we go,
we are been hailed by the people. So, I am confident that the people of Kano
will return us Kwankwasiyya into power in 2015. Any challenges ahead of your
aspirations? I know that many good sons of the state are into the race to be
chosen by the people of the state to govern them. I equally admit that all who
are contesting the governorship position of the state are qualified. They are
people of proven integrity and anybody who is elected is capable to deliver.
So, what I can say is that, only the electorate is in the position to elect the
candidate that would lead them in the next four years. How fully has the SURE-P
Fund been utilized? I usually say that the allocations we receive in Kano State
are like that of any other state in the federation. Kano state has survived
till this moment of our great achievement because we have huge internally
The state government has designed a strata that blocks any
hole which in the past allowed wastage and fraudulent disposal of state funds.
At least from mere N340 million, we are presently
generating over N200 million every month. And since we started, we
have not borrowed from any financial source because His Excellency, the
Executive Governor of Kano State, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is against such act.
I can now tell you and anyone that we manage what we have to achieve all that
we have. Projects’ completion His Excellency, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has
stated that the government should be able to complete virtually all the
projects it started. But I can still tell you that there are some projects that
we may not be able to complete before the end of this government, like the
Hydro Electricity Project, the Sabon Gari 2km Flyover Bridge, and the few other
big projects. The roll over of these projects’ completion is as a result of the
technicalities involved in them, and all these projects we have mentioned cost
N12 billion each; but I must tell you that they will be done to the finish even
when rolled over. Kwankwaso backing any contestant? I do not know, because all
the contestants are rallying over him and he is a father to all of us. He is
managing the situation very well and when the time comes eventually, one person
will surely emerge.
What should people expect from you if elected? I am part
and parcel of the planning and execution of the achievements and policies of
this administration, so if the people give me their mandate, I think every
realistic administrator should continue with building on the legacy of Governor
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and make sure that new innovations strives to enhance the
face of Kano in the nearest future to a mega city, including the development of
the rural areas. As Commissioner for Local Government Affairs The local
government is the nearest government to the people. We have done with absolute
tenderness and wisdom, the demands of the people by making sure that we provide
for credible persons to chair each of the 44 local government areas in the
state. We also provide competent persons who are councilors and who are
presently working hard to make sure the state and local government areas meet
the yearnings of the people. Since 2011, I can say that our local government
areas are functioning perfectly and they will continue to meet the expectations
of the people.
