While i passionately congratulate the radical politician Alhaji Balarabe Musa on his 77th birthday and for his fruitful and radical years ofservice to raise the status of the masses,i also sadly condole with us the bitter truth that our leaders are thieves.Of course as he rightly put it,there are exceptions.
Balarabe's assertion should be seen from the spontaneous overflow of powerful emotion emanating from his disappointed heart.The statement also depicts the main theme of Nigeria's politics,that is,looting through politics.It is this character that underdevelops us and enslaves us and takes us to the brink of a precipice.
Balarabe's statement was backed by self confidence and a strong opposition against any oppressive system and its engineers.As a former governor of the old Kaduna,he proved to the world his philosophy of a leader which was in line with the dictates of his political mentor,the late Aminu Kano of blessed memory who emphatically declared,'State leadership is not a source of amassing wealth,pomposity or self complacency but a trust for which the bearer is to be accountable to both people and God.'
Regretably, Nigeria is passing through its darkest moments.Leadership is now regarded as a convinient source of accumulating ill-gotten wealth.This unhealthy trend is like a dreaded disease ravaging our social being.It is the architect of our national catastrophy. It is the designer of our pessimism.An above all,it is the greatest threat to our survival.
When Balarabe Musa was impeached as a governor for committing no offence,the lesson that we learnt was that the reactionary elements would always be a serious danger to transparent leadership.Even if no one saw,God in his infinite mercy knew that Balarabe was an incorruptible leader who would take Kaduna to greater heights.But he was caught up in the midst of those who wanted the
public treasury to be looted.
It is now history. But what is also history is that when he was impeached 32 years ago,he warned us of an impending doom which is manifesting now in all its ramifications.Hear him,'We are today living interms of great changes. The old order is crumbling fast. New system of life and activities are emerging. Our task here is to understand these changes and turn them toward human progress'.
In the context of the contemporary Nigeria,the old order is the missing of great patriots such as Azikiwe,Aminu Kano,Awolowo,Tafawa Balewa,Sardauna.The emerging new activities include the evil design of public treasury looting by some leaders. Interestingly,Balarabe Musa did not mention a national calamity without identifying its cause.Of course the faulty system always stands in our way to salvation.It is this rotten system that creates sorrows and broken homes.It is this ugly system that enables questionable characters to be at the helm affairs and make our living miserable.It is the infamous system that breeds class antagonism.Infact,it is the antagonistic system that turns some Nigerians hard lords over others.
Balarabe Musa has offered us a fair and balanced judgement. It is not always appropriate to condemn something or somebody without assessing the seeming contributory factor.What is also significant is our collective and jingoistic resolve fight and conquer this evil of looting by some unjingoitic leaders.
