The National Open University of Nigeria has made it compulsory for all students to pay for printed book materials, which the amount ranges from N2 000 and above.
It is evident that no student can perform their semester registration without having paid for the course materials. the irony of the whole issue is that among all the students of the Lagos Study Centre, with a population of over 20 000 students in Lagos alone, no one seem to get any of their materials every semester.
Students register for a minimum of 7 courses per semester. Now the question is; where do all these funds d students pay go to? I am using only Lagos Study Centre as a case study, there are thousands of students spread all over the country.
If we take N2 000, for example, multiply it by 7 courses, which is minimum of N14 000 per student and multiply the N14 000 by 2 000 students, the total amount (N280 000 000) is what goes into somebody's pocket every semester, the detriment of the innocent students, also note please that this is the minimum amount.
The same thing is happening all through Nigeria. The school authority therefore advices students to go print out the course materials online with another set of money, after paying to the school for the said material.
Now, my point is, I am pleading and I need help so that this message can get to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan. Perhaps, he can help look into this serious issue, also sending some audit team and do whatever he can to stop these scammers from defrauding innocent poor students of the National Open University of Nigeria, who are struggling hard to get education at all cost, instead of being miscreants in the society.
