I do not,as yet understand why the president,Jonathan is working hard to prove to Nigerians that he is working for the general good of Nigerians.Rather than demonstrate to the public why he deserved the votes cast in his favour,Jonathan used a forum last week in Abuja to unleash his bile against the nation’s press and some members of the public for not praising his government for all it has achieved so far.
In Abuja, the president said:”I score Nigerians newspapers low’’.When people ask me ‘have you read the news today?,I reply by telling them that the newspapers are always writing about the weaknesses of the president’’.He used the official ceremony in Abuja to unleash his anger and dissatisfaction with the nation’s media as well as their owners.
According to the president, the media didn’t have the capacity to assess his government so dispassionately. This brief observation was made during the signing of the Performance Contract Agreement with the ministers.
The president said his government was no longer going to depend on the media for an unbiased assessment of his government achievement because according to him,the nation’s media have descended to political instruments of their respective owners used to actualization of selfish interests. To be specific the president said unjustifiably:’’Before, the media used to be the voice of the ordinary people but now,it is the voice of those who own media houses and those who own media houses have private jets and those who own private jets aren’t ordinary people. So, we have a way of assessing ourselves’’.Wonderful,mr president!
To avoid any bias and conflicting interests, such assessment must be carried out by an independent body. The government of the day should understand that no credible organization except politically motivated ones can rate it high. Some people say that the government is trying its best going by the level of insecurity in the land. But mere trying is not what Nigeria needs because the government activities is a step forward and ten steps backward.A student who scored 39.9% and that who scored 0% are the same.
Therefore, the government of the day is a failure. How can you achieve a fair and frank evaluation when ministers and the president undertake judgement of their own performances? If the media as claimed by Jonathan were influenced to make their assessment of his government, whose interests do the public that has also rated him low serve?
The public critical remarks about any government is usually a reflection of their perceptions of that government’s performance. Why must the government, ministers and other political office holders take the assessment of the government’s achievement in any sane country? The public is always in a better position to judge the government in any rational thinking nation in the world than the ministers.
The ministers are members of the president’s cabinet and you don’t expect them to judge against him if they were asked to do so.Afterall,he who pays the piper dictates his tune. The president wants to be the dancer as well as the judge of his/her own artistic prowess and performance in a public forum.
Jonathan’s remark on the media is a disturbing indication that he prefers to play to the gallery at the expense of the Nigerian people.
On the other hand,it’s a mere hypocrisy that ministers must sign a Performance Contract Agreement before they can perform in office. It is indeed a false believe. The public is neither dumb nor blind that it can’t differentiate between a performing and non productive government.
By the virtue of their swearing-in, a rational and well meaning minister presumes that he /she has entered into a performance agreement with the government.Ministers are not just appointed to speak ‘big grammar’ as obtainable in Nigeria. They are appointed to perform and bring about drastic and the much needed transformation to government policies.Jonathan’s achievement record in this past one year is completely on the deficit angle of his political record if there is any.
Mr president came into office with a lot of hope.Infact, prior to the elections, his fans argued that his incomparable qualities would emerge as soon as he was officially crowned the president. For over one year that the president has sat on the throne, every one is still waiting for the man to carve his name in the hearts of Nigerians through a verifiable achievement record.Any effective president is determined by his achievement.
Mr president,we are still awaiting the good in your name to rub-off on Nigeria.Any way, this is a bitter lesson to us all that we must not always bank on luck to do well.
