Whenever i reflect on the prevailing insecurity ravaging our beloved country,my mind recalls the popular philosophical assertion that,"The only security on earth is opportunity" Who can dispute this wisdom paradigm both in its theoretical and practical dimensions? We are all living witnesses to the growing insecurity in the country
.Almost on a daily basis lives and property are destroyed as a result of insurgency, kidnapping, armed robbery. These killings and destructions have become the order of the day, seem to have defied solutions. While the government believes that the solution to the menace has to do with the escalating rise in the budgetary allocation on security ,the problem persists in a very alarming proportion.Though the idea of investing more on the recruitment of security personnel and the purchase of sophisticated weapons is a welcome development,we should also not forget that the institution of corruption in
the country may not after all allow the allocated fund to be judiciously utilized. And what is more important is the fact that insecurity in our country is not self-made,it is rather the unfortunate handiwork of the undesirable elements in our midst who prove the architects of the barsterdization of opportunities.
What is opportunity? From the point of view of the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, opportunity means a time when a particular situation makes it possible to do or achieve something. In Nigeria's context,we have both the human and natural resources at our disposal to attain greatness, leading to a high level of security. This is our opportunity but for too long it has been kicked like a ball.Unfortunately, many of the custodians of the public treasury are too eager to tamper with our opportunities thereby facilitating the spread of evils across the land. The illegitimate conversion of public fund to personal gains breeds extreme affluence on one hand and extreme squalor on the other hand.
Like a time bomb, the casualties of the monopolization of opportunities are now holding the nation to ransome by dragging it to the current level of a brink of a precipice. These casualties have been denied their fundamental human opportunities interms of quality education, gainful employment as well as a feeling of a sense of belonging and therefore resort to violence.
Looking at it from the perspective of leadership as a means of securing opportunities as the bedrock for security,it is only a masses oriented leadership that can revolutionise the distribution of wealth and policies that will not jeoperdize a person's deserved and legitimate opportunity. On the other hand, any leadership that is tantamount to a missing link with the yearnings of the downtrodden is a surest way to security risk.
Even if all the nation's wealth is to be spent in tackling insecurity, the worst that may be achieved is the further self-enrichment of private individuals especially if the leardership is politically bankrupt. In essence therefore,we should profoundly reflect, believe and act on the philosophy that the only security on earth is opportunity and if we relegate it to the background we shall continue to be insecured.
