On a stool outside the hut, on a clear, moonlit night
Sat an old man, sage and full of grey
His eyes bright, his voice quavering
There he told us of the glories of his past
The strength of his youth
Then he mentioned in a moment of awe
A time when we were yet scattered
Strung together, yet without a shepherd
He told of how the white deer gathered the lambs, black and white alike
And made them one fold
He told of the promise of that fold
Of the strength in her loins
And of the wisdom in her heart
He told of how we started
How as a nation we groped until we found the light
Five score years have gone by
And the fold still hold strong
Though wolves threaten to tear us at the seams
The sheep and the shepherd all keep watch
Oh! Tell the wolves that promised to eat us up
That in unity shall our fold stand strong
That though the tempest be risen high
And the tide beat us strong
Yet, together we shall overcome
Arise o Nigeria, our own dear native land
For our flag shall be our symbol and our brotherhood our strength
It’s a century that we were born And like all children born....
