London bade farewell to the Olympics last night(Sunday night) after two good weeks of uninterrupted actions.Though, hundreds of medals were won by countries, both the winners and losers were equal last night. The much talked about London Olympics are now history as newest crop of Olympic champions departed the wonderful city that they once collectively charmed.
The two weeks games ended with a high octane romp of British Music as the United States are still envied as the most successful country in the Olympics with 46 gold medals where many countries went home medaless.
The Olympic event came to an end as the Cream of the British music industry-such as ‘The Spice Girls’,’The Who’ and remaining members of Queen rocked everyone in a spectacular and joyful way.
The ceremony that was titled "A Symphony Of British Music" was full of fun.The dazzling closing ceremony took thousands of spectators as well as millions of viewers at home like me on a journey through the swinging of Carnaby Street, into the 80s new waves and unto the ballads of the nineties and finally closing with a pop and rap tracks.
No wonder Sebastian Coe,a London Organizing Committee chief said "We lit the flame, and we lit up the world and our time came,Britain did it right".According to the official London 2012 website, more than 4,100 participants including 3,500 adults and about 380 school pupils participated in the psychedelic celebration, giving hope to the young ones as the future leaders.
It was indeed an emotional experience that many would live to remember for years to come,as both the opening and closing ceremonies were fantastic, showing the British rich culture.
As more than 10,000 athletes from about 204 countries arrived and marched the Olympic stadium, the audience rose to their feet uniformly as a symbol of unity in diversity.
Contrary to the opening ceremony, athletes marched together without irrespective of nationality. This marching gave them the opportunity to be free and enjoy the celebration as a united people or group. This practice brings the global athletes together as one nation.
A statement was released by the Queen though she was not in attendance, thanking the volunteers.Monty Python alum Eric Idle made my night a special one as he entertained the audience with his special kind of rib-cracking comedy.
Another spectacular moment I won’t forget so easily was seeing 'The Spice Girls’ reunited after a long while to sing "Wanna be" and "Spice Up Your Life" as the audience followed along.
Indeed, this celebration afforded the competitors including our brothers and sisters from Nigeria the opportunity of letting down their hair, mingle and momentarily forget their failures. The host country, the Great Britain used this final opportunity to showcase its artistic accomplishments and finally handed over the Olympic flame to Socchi,Russia that will be hosting the 2014 winter games. We will have to wait till 2016 to witness another history making Olympic events in Brazil.God bless Nigeria!
