Technical and vocational education is education within vocational schools that people for a specific trade. It directly develops expertise in techniques related to technology, vocational skills and science.
Vocational education can be at the secondary, post secondary and further education levels. it is closely related to the apprenticeship system of learning.
In India, for example vocational training has been successful in industrial training and engineering trades. While in Japan, it is a part of the higher institution system that interested students study at after high school for at least 2years in areas like ICT, fashion and foreign languages like English and French.
In Nigeria, TVE is taken for granted and hence isn't really encouraged, and is sometimes seen as the poor man's job due to lack of proper incentives.
The Nigerian government as a matter of urgency must participate actively in technical and vocational education policy matters through: 1) curriculum development 2) adequate funding 3) stable and functional TVE programs 4) Public-private partnership 5) legislation using informal education 6) Periodic manpower survey.
Finally, to avoid ineptitude, technological backwardness and other negative effects, TVE should be included in the school curriculum to avoid ineptitude especially among engineers and technologists.
God bless Nigeria!
