The New Age of Fashion

13 December 2012, 11:10

My childhood fashion memories had little or no knowledge whatsoever of how to mix and match colours. This left me always obliged to my parent's well suited outfits in my closet.

Well over the years, I tasted the forbidden fruit and with eyes wide open, I could finally say, Yes! to the 'dress to match' theme; either matching ties with the right shirts, pants to blazers, and then not forgetting shoes.

The fashion industry was and is still filled with renowned designer brands, from Calvin Klein, to Versace, Kenneth Cole, Valentino, Gucci, Emporio Armani; and if a designer item wasn't hung in your wardrobe, then you were considered not fashion savvy.

I sometimes think about the research carried out to create such unique styles, as the 1980's leopard print mix of leather fabrics and denim. In 2012, the little kids from back then have all grown to discover and recognise fashion.

Modern fashion not only refers to lining up outfits, but also to the minute details, fabrics used, colours put together, and accessories that match.

Young designers marking new trends for the new age include; Bade Bello of '1808 Classics'; who has combined the world of couture and merged it with the denims hence giving it a whole new stylish appearance. Bello's favourite piece-the ankara/denim tees have become quite a staple in the university campuses.

Ready to wear (RTW) outfits by Victor Agianpuye of "V-stitches", is yet another to keep an eye for. He has managed to strike a balance between the old and young, making trendy RTW pieces. Quite famous for his blazers and jackets that have graced the bodies of celebrities and creating a lot of buzz in Abuja.

The new age fashion no longer bases its significance on labels, but on sustainability, functionality and comfortability. So embrace the new age, fashion is style, taste, uniqueness. Fashion is being comfortable.
