Tribalism, as a social philosophy, is based on the construction of series of imaginary boundaries which establish the 'us' and 'them' dichotomy.
Based on on this dichotomy, each ethnic group assumes then an appropriate aggressive posture towards 'them' beyond the so conceived boundary. It is the persistence of this boundary in our actions and in our reflexes that fosters tribalism in Nigeria. Nigeria was amalgamated more than fifty years ago.

Over thirty years ago we resumed jointly our independence and have since held one seat in the United Nations. Despite all this, Nigerians today still have no clear concept and definition of home. Is Nigeria home to all Nigerians, or is it the state of origin that is our home? Nigeria intend eventually to return home, the problem of tribalism will persist.
If we believe in unity, as I most certainly do, then we must accept that our survival can only be through unity, that without Unity we shall all perish. Then we must be prepared to approach the issues of Unity and National Solidarity realistically, selflessly, fearlessly and with a singularity of purpose. We must overcome old prejudice and entrenched interests and banish for every Nigerian, the atmosphere of insecurity The choice is a there, only Nigerians can decide. The problem today is that we are neither united nor diverse.
