The whole world waited earnestly for Sunday night to come for a variety of reasons but for lovers of sprint, the most popular event at the Olympics, like my very self, I knew that history would made as all the major contenders gave good reasons to expect surprises in less than 10seconds.
There were a lot of reasons not to miss the ‘big one’ even if you had no light in your neighborhood because it promised to be the highlights of the Olympics. Speculations about Bolt’s fitness caused a lot of worries but I strongly believed that as far as he stepped into the field on Sunday night,he would accomplish his aim of becoming the world’s sprint legend.Right from the day Bolt ran 100m for 9.58seconds, I started looking at him as a strange being.
No wonder many great athletes have said it takes only Bolt to beat Bolt as it takes Bolt to set a world record and break it at will.’’ Four years ago, Bolt set the track world on fire with an incredible Olympics performance in Beijing and looked like he was going to do it once again in London. At the London’s Olympics stadium,he exploded down the track and won the ultimate gold medal in the 100m in a blazing time of 9.63seconds. Many have highlighted some problems that might work against Bolt’s success at this event. The short comings according to them are: Bolt’s starts were sluggish. His health was an issue. Some critics even said that his partying life style was also an issue but Bolt shamed all his critics and went ahead to overcome all this.
One amazing trait possessed by this incredible athlete is that he starts slower than his fellow contenders such as Ashafa Powell,Yohan Blake,Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin but reaches the destination mark before them. His coach, Glen Mills said of Bolt earlier this month’You were not a fast starter in Beijing and you broke the world’s record. You were also a bad starter in Berlin and you broke it again. You will never be a better starter in London but you can still break world’s records again’. Sincerely speaking,I asked myself,Is there any more records for Bolt to break apart from his own record? No.
Sunday night looked a bit different because he started out fine but not as great as those of Gatlin and Blake. Bolt caught up with them and passed them all. Infact it was a jaw dropping, eye opening performance by Bolt after all the criticisms and speculations that his era in track has gone.
With I saw on Sunday night,I may not be wrong to say that as far as track is concerned,Bolt is a leader while the other contenders are followers. They only need a miracle to beat Bolt as affirmed by Blake who said ‘’He is the fastest man in the world and I’ve got a silver medal. What more can I ask for? To be the second fastest man behind Bolt is an honour’’.
Prior to this Olympic,he said that ’’I‘m about 90 percent fit’’Bolt proved you can be world best while having a laugh and not taking yourself too seriously. He dominated the men’s 100m and celebrated it with his signature pose.He created a new 100m Olympic record of 9.63 seconds. Infact it’s believed that he runs at 30mph and if he happens to hit a child along there is a great possibility of 40% that such child will die.
Some even say that he runs faster than the speed of thought, incredible! Usain Bolt indeed,a man to be treasured.Everything about Bolt is world class even as he became a world class entertainer last night thrilling everyone in the stadium including those of us watching over the television.Bolt turned all of us Jamaicans as he became the first repeat gold medalist in 100m since Carl Lewis.I wished I was a Jamaican on Sunday night but I still love my dear country, Nigeria.
