We are clearly back to 'UP NEPA' days

21 November 2012, 11:48

When Professor Barth Nnaji abruptly resigned as the Minister of Power and Energy in Nigeria, I was taken aback first and foremost because it came as a rude shock and secondly because power was gradually being stabilized in the Country whilst hope was being restored to some businesses which erstwhile were being threatened by the constant power outage in the Country.

Of course knowing the depth of cancerous corruption that has eaten deep into the heart of this country, I didn’t expect his tenure to be an easy ride coupled with the fact that we are in a dispensation where the one who refuses to join the bandwagon of corruption is labeled the traitor. Professor tried to salvage this country from darkness but when it became obvious that he wasn’t going to join the bulk of people who made a fortune from the country being plunged into perpetual darkness, they turned the table and ensured even the President twisted the Professor’s hand backwards by asking him to resign.

On resignation, Prof made a speech and I quote a sentence from that speech; ‘History will justify my tenure as the minister for Power and Energy in Nigeria’. Now that Prof has been taken out of the equation, they have successfully allocated the distribution companies to themselves under the guise of privatization. As if the insult on our intelligence was not enough, they have further taken us back to the path of medieval age.

The reality at hand now is that Power outage has returned and we have gone back to keeping candle manufacturers and diesel sellers back in business…..No thanks to the removal of Prof Barth Nnaji via politics.

My friend jokingly said ‘When a child is born, he first learns to say daddy and mummy, the next he learns to say is UP NEPA’ so funny but very true!

It is so sad that at a point we were already thinking there was a glimmer of hope for constant electricity, we were jolted back to the reality of a country which thrives on corruption. Need I say more about the contribution of stable power supply to any economy? I still feel this whole drama called Nigeria is one bad dream I must wake up from someday!

To this administration and its cohorts, May Karma repay everyone with interest who has contributed to ensuring this country has once again been plunged into darkness.

Indeed history has it that Professor Barth Nnaji tried his best as the Minister of Power and Energy; for this outstanding effort, posterity will judge him well…..At least he has successfully convinced us that it's possible to have stable power supply in Nigeria.
