What happened to the reading culture?

05 September 2014, 12:59 Jibunor George Chuks.

As they say ''No knowledge is a waste''. But then one could ask; what is the problem or fear that has caused many people to neglect reading! You can only be afraid of what you don't know but what you know is your friend. But by trying to know much as possible will possibly make you to conquer all. I write because when I do, it makes me to read more books in other for my knowledge to be expanded.

There are many libraries but students no longer patronise those places. Even the lecturers all have equally stopped reading and researching. Students are been taught old things over and over again because those involve to teach are all lazy to read and research. Most textbooks in the school libraries and state libraries have all been covered by dusts; reasons because lack of interest by students and the general public to read.

The just released result of last West African Examination Council (WAEC), recorded mass failure of which that many questions should be; what went wrong? And how it can be tackled. Social media has taken everywhere, thereby consuming the highest level of time in the life of people. Ebola Virus Disease(EVD) brought panic into the country because even the medical personal's that are supposed to bring calm to the people equally gone into fear because they ran out of ideas; this is because they have stopped reading and researching.

Parents prefers to buy video games as a present for their children instead of something that they could benefit from. The white read's and research's, then with the knowledge acquired, they produce something that will keep us busy and sends to us as consumption. In doing that, they continue to produce and sends to us in other to keep us busy with what we can produce on our own. We need to go back to reading and researching mentality. That is why you find out that most people don't even read their Holy books anymore. Ask! If people find it difficult to read their Holy books, how then can they read ordinary books. The way out is to engage the public and eradicate them on the important of reading and researching. God bless us.
