What manner of presidency do we have in Nigeria?

11 August 2014, 07:59 Akinlolu Abdulazeez Adelaja

“Peace must be such that freedom can flourish and justice prevail.” – Ronald Reagan. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.

Clearly, our dear President Jonathan has demonstrated more commitment to the 2015 elections than the peace and security of Nigeria. President GEJ has continued to deploy security forces under the guise of ensuring peace during elections to intimidate and harass law abiding Nigerian citizens.

We have seen it before during the extreme militarization of the Ekiti State Governorship elections. Similarly, in Osun State, the deployed DSS officers announced their presence few weeks ago with masked faces and shooting sporadically into the air to intimidate and harass Osun State residents ahead of the Saturday Aug. 9th governorship elections.

The good people of Osun State complained about this anomaly. Mr. President did not give a damn. The security officers have become more emboldened and prevented Osun State Workers from staging a pro-Aregbesola rally at the Freedom Park in Osogbo, the State Capital.

Gov. Aregbesola belongs to APC, the main opposition party in Nigeria. The only interpretation here is injustice in action. Similarly, residents continue to complain of being harassed by masked security officers.

The security officers deployed to Osun State are fellow citizens, so why are they masked while on duty? How do we differentiate between fake armed thugs in 'military regalia' from the real security officers when our own dear officers are masked? Can there be freedom in a state of intimidation, harassment and fear? The answer is No.

As quoted above, it is only when freedom flourish and justice prevail that PEACE can be confirmed as being in existence. If the security officers deployed to Osun State are for peace to ensure a free and fair election, then we can clearly say the aim is already defeated. There can be no peace, without freedom and justice. There can be no free and fair election in the absence of freedom and justice.

Unfortunately for our dear nation, our Commander-in-Chief continues to deploy security forces based on political partisanism while the Boko Haram terrorists continue to kill, kidnap and abduct our people as well as taking over territories.

Reports say Damboa had been taken over weeks ago and the the terrorists have not only driven away our soldiers from military barracks, hosted their flags in the town but have taken over Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gamboru Ngala road and now collect toll gates, kill our people and kidnap girls.

The Federal Government responded saying security forces have already been moved to drive away the terrorists from Damboa.

The terrorists have not been driven away! The terrorists are apparently winning more territories and have reportedly taken over Gwoza (one of the largest towns in Borno State) and the new Emir of Gwoza's whereabouts is said to be unknown. The former Emir of Gwoza was killed by the terrorists too. May the souls of all our fallen heroes rest in peace. Amen.

The government and security agencies of Cameroun freed the abducted wife of the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief of Kolofata and others from Boko Haram within two days! (less than a week). Nigerian government and our security agencies are yet to free our people kidnapped before, during and after the Chibok incident.

Our girls are yet to be home more than three months after being kidnapped. The Federal Government kept saying the location where our daughters are kept is known, yet no one is sure of the fate of our kidnapped girls. There have been reported cases of bombing incidents involving female suicide bombers, where are our girls?

No sponsor of terrorism has been arrested despite the arrests of their leaders such as Kabiru Sokoto, Sadiq Ogwuche and others. Gen. Minimah, Chief of Army Staff confirmed challenges facing the military as including sodiers running away from the war front.

We have read of soldiers complaining of poor welfarism and about families of our fallen heroes not adequately taken care of. We have read of the mismanagement of security funds and soldiers not provided with adequate weaponry. Oil theft has risen to unprecedented level and states no longer have enough funds for their activities. President Jonathan has failed to fight corruption and activate the political will to deal with sponsors of terrorism.

President Jonathan's supporters have continued to insult our collective intelligence by displaying the photos of our President with wonderful and great Americans; President Barrack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama as a sort of endorsement describing President Jonathan as a prophet who is not honoured at home.

There is no basis for comparison or reference relationship between President Jonathan and President Obama. In any case, similar pictures were taken with other African Heads of States!

President Obama not only took out America from economic depression (with ever increasing job growth), but worked with the legislature to provide a lasting eternal legacy through the reforms of the health sector that provided expanded affordability, have saved more lives and will continue to save more lives. President Obama provided the political will and worked with security agents to capture and kill Osama bin Laden.

America's safety and interests both at home and abroad were never compromised on the basis of political partisanism. So, where is the reference relationship between President Barrack Obama and President Goodluck Jonathan?

Let our dear President Jonathan change for the better and write his name in gold. Let him disengage from the culture of recklessness and impunity. Let him activate the political will to deal with our systemic corruption, sponsors of terrorism and resolve human rights abuses by our security agents to establish justice and to solidify civilian-security agencies' relationship. This is the way to save the nation. God Bless Nigeria.
