Ai Nigeria. Most of the discussion in the newspaper mainly focuses on the problem of bribery, corruption and its pervasive affect on our national living. That has been a phenomenon which seems to have settled comfortably with us more so that we now regard it in a rather casual manner, and as a normal way of life.
Can one ask, what exactly is the nature of corruption in Nigeria? Why is it affecting the whole parts of the economy and how can it be minimized, if not completely eliminated?
In Nigeria corruption has taken over all aspects in the country. Contracts are not awarded on the objective criteria of feasibility studies. It is a matter of personal relationship, bribery, club affiliations, expectation of some kick-backs, and more. Loans from banks are not on merit of what you need them for. It is the bribery from the loan decides the manager’s approval. Job seekers either have to bribe their way through to get the jobs or no job. No job opportunities. The rapid declining of the economy. Poor awareness of the approved rights. Dire needs and a host of others have often been cited as factors above.
Some suggestion has been offered for the alleviation of the matter. Many of these suggestions are practical, while others seem unrealistic mostly in the context of the present orientation in the country. However the problem of corruption can only be tackled by applying some practical solutions.
Thus, we have to start with our leaders. It’s been suggested that leaders must lead by examples, it’s not enough for them to condemned corruption, and they themselves must not seen to be involved in any dirt practice. This calls for a great deal of honesty from them coupled with an appreciate degree of integrity and the readiness to help others without expecting to be cheaply rewarded.
The system of education needs a serious overhaul. In –to achieved some positive results. The teaching program must include subjects like civics and social studies which normally expose students to their rights, its limit and virtues of good neighborliness. Moral instruction in the schools should be title in favor of those imperative that emphasize justice, fairness and settlement.
In addition, we need a radical re-orientation with regards to our value system in the country. There should be low emphasis on the acquisition of material things. Those things that help to uplift and uphold the glory name of the country need to be promoted.
