Wisdom, the principal thing

09 July 2013, 09:04 Onyeji Dominic

Wisdom means different things to different sets of people. What it is to Christians is not what it is to others on earth. All the same, God is God and wisdom is wisdom. We cannot talk about wisdom without making reference to both God and the Word (Bible). This is because God is a wise God and everything about wisdom has its root from divinity.

The book of Proverbs 4:7 has a distinct definition of wisdom. It is distinctive because the pundit tapped it direct from supernatural. King Solomon was known to mankind as a mouthpiece of God and so, it was generally believed that he was a divine medium. His words in Bible were truths and it was God who actually spoke through him.

King Solomon described wisdom in Bible as the principal thing. He made it very clear to us on several occasions in book of Proverbs, stating that people without wisdom are living in shadow or limbo. Their lives are baseless because they lack solid or basic foundation. A rational study of the Proverbs reveals that men who lack wisdom cannot overcome real challenges in life and the worst part of it is that they go through their whole lives battling ceaselessly with retardation.

Tim Smith was among many who did well in treating the issue of wisdom on earth. In one of his articles titled, “The Spirit of Wisdom is the Principle Thing”  Tim Smith (April 16, 2010) said, “This is what I have come to learn of wisdom in the sense of application. Wisdom is not knowledge! Wisdom employs or uses knowledge. Knowledge alone is just information we gain that has not been put to any practical use. The knowledge of the word of God is good, but we can possess the knowledge of what is written in the Bible, while our personal lives don’t change much because we don’t see how it applies to everyday life. …wisdom deals with what you do, not just what you know. Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge effectively to produce good results. As this concerns the knowledge of the thing of God, the wisdom of God enables us to apply the knowledge of God effectively to produce good results.”

Looking at wisdom from general point of view, it is right application of knowledge. Simple! A person without knowledge should just forget about wisdom because what he needs to get is knowledge. Ignorance is the opposite of knowledge. Men without knowledge are referred to as the ignorant. In Hebrew, ignorance is the same thing as total darkness. It means that a person without knowledge has failure as companion because in darkness anybody can stumble and fall down woefully.

Christians may share a different view of wisdom because scriptural portraits of it are many. We saw several places in Bible where wisdom was personalized and there were several places also where it was not described as a person. The views and opinions have many similarities, and the fact remains that wisdom is wisdom and there is only one source to it, divinity.

Wisdom remains the principal thing and God remains the origin. This implies that men (Christians or non-Christians) cannot do without wisdom because it is meant to be number one thing in lives of men on earth. It is the bases of living, the foundation on which every other thing should be built. Truth is that wisdom is the core thing in life and man cannot get it from God without acquiring knowledge.

Apostles in Bible revealed that there were two basic forms of wisdom. They presented their opinions expressly and according to Apostle James, wisdom could be demonic if it was not of God. He made a clear distinction between wisdom of God and wisdom of the world. The difference was very clear, and insight equally revealed it to the wise that righteousness was what actually made the difference. This simply means that wisdom is the same thing from every indication. But righteousness is what actually makes the distinction in Bible. It is clearly stated that if righteousness is added to wisdom, it becomes wisdom of God and vice versa. Wisdom is of God when it deals with the Word or when it is based purely on God. It is of the world when the medium, user and matter involve are not holy and sacred.

Wisdom has only one source and we cannot get it if we remain in ignorance. This is scriptural, and as we all know in the world today, the most profitable way to acquire knowledge is through sound education. So, the Christians who are likely to get the most profitable wisdom from God are those with the most profitable knowledge through sound education. This is the real truth of the matter.

Divine wisdom, according to Paul the Apostle, is a special gift from God. (1 Corinthians 12:1-8) It is the special ability given by God to help a person put what he or she knows to work in order to achieve the desired aim of acquiring the knowledge. For example, a person that read law cannot make it in life if he does not receive wisdom from God.

Knowledge and wisdom are so important in life. But wisdom is the most important for every person. This is why Bible refers to it as the principal thing. Prophecy of Malachi in the Bible revealed that one of the assignments of the second Messenger was to make Zion learned and qualified for the renowned wisdom of God.

This is what it means by saying, “…like the refiner of silver, he will sit and closely watch as the dross is burning away.” (Malachi 3)
