Your health vs. your affairs

17 June 2015, 12:19

Sexually related affairs have been responsible for many disease conditions among young people. The need to create greater level of awareness on the risks associated with these preventable conditions then became necessary. Sexual affairs lead to what is called Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) or Venereal Diseases (VD).

In 2008, statistics show that 500 million people were infected with Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia or Trichomoniasis, 530 million with genital herpes and 290 million with HPV. These figures are quite alarming and should provoke the embrace of a new lifestyle among young people especially. STDs are transmitted, that is, an action leads to a reaction.

Young people please abstain from illicit affairs and your future is guaranteed health wise. Some STDs are not known with any symptoms, others do not present any visible symptoms at the initial stage. A person may have been infected and you will not know. Generally, symptoms of STDs include: vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, penile discharge, ulcers around genitals, bleeding in between periods, burning sensations during urination, headaches, backaches, small blisters around sensitive areas and more.

Over 30 different bacteria, viruses and parasites can cause STDs such as Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Genital herpes, HIV/AIDS, Chlamydia, Hepatitis B etc. For the unmarried, the most effective way to prevent STDs is to abstain from sex and other forms of intimate connections with the opposite sex or same sex as the case may be. Living together with infected persons can also raise the risk of being infected; some vaccinations can reduce risk for Hepatitis B infections, but these are not available for all STDs.

While conditions like Syphilis, Gonorrhea and a few others are curable, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and HPV can only be managed especially at the later stage. It should be noted that the most effective contraceptive cannot prevent the transmission of some of these diseases. Incidentally, people with Hepatitis B infection seem to be more than even HIV because of lack of awareness as the case may be. Hepatitis B infection can only be managed and it is a Liver disease that could be easily transmitted.

A statistic shows that approximately 2 billion people are infected with this disease worldwide (World Hepatitis Day 2012, WHO). As a health worker, there is no single time that young people do not show up in my centre with different cases of these infections. This is one of the reasons for this article, which is to reduce the risks among young people. Some of the people infected with these diseases are as young as 11 years old, 14 years old etc. Now, tell me, does it mean that such a person’s future will be used to manage a disease and you know such may even die in the process.

It should be noted that managing a disease like Hepatitis B could be really expensive. In addition, contacts with infected persons can also be dangerous. This could be through body contact, exchange of saliva or body fluid, use of contaminated items and a lot more. A young person will do his or her family a lot of good by not being infected because one member of a family can infect all members within a short period. HPV & Herpes can be transmitted through skin contact.

In some cases, infected persons may not be aware and infect other people around them. To avoid this, blood screenings should be conducted at least once a year to prevent the risk of infection. It is important to know that sexual affairs are meant for the married. That is the way God designed it. Parents and would-be parents, should encourage kids to do the right thing at the right time, it is for the good of us all in the larger society.

Now, if you notice any symptoms related to any mentioned or you discovered through a personal research that you may likely be carrying an infection, please seek for medical help. Remember, these infections are spread by micro organisms and if they are not well attended to, they can be multiplied and cause great damages. Secondly, do not engage in self medication, it is risky. Be free to contact me if you need any help. With God on your side, you have a happy future.
