When comes to the most important journey of our lives, this journey has two important characteristics; it is unavoidable and unpredictable, that is the journey of death.
Death indeed is a transformation to another realm,it is the greatest reality. According to the tenent of Muslim faith, death is the complete end of physical life and beginning of a period of rest until the day of resurrection when Allah (God) the all mighty will judge the living and dead. In reference to the holy Qur'an about death: "Wheresoever you may be,death will overtake you even if you are in Fortresses built up story and high!" Qur'an 4:78.
Death is the reality from which none can escape. It draws nearer every day; every hour; every minute. It is indeed the most significant, and important journey that the human being undertake .According to the CIA's The World Factbook 2007, almost two people die each second. That is a staggering 57.9 millon people each year! Allah(God)has informed us in the Qur'an that He has created us with purpose of worshipping Him alone and that He made this life a test to see who will fulfil that purpose. "And I did not create the Jinn and Mankind except to worship Me" Qur'an 51:56.
What is the purpose of Death? God has also informed us the purpose behind the creation of death and life: "Allah is He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is the best indeed." Qur'an 67:2. How do we prepare ourselves for this Ultimate Journey? One does not prepare for death by pre-paying funeral service or selecting a coffin in advance. It is about fulfilling one's purpose in life,to worship Allah alone, to live according to His commandment, and perform good deeds.
The concept of worship in Islam is all encompassing and is not merely restricted to praying. In fact, any action that is pleasing to Allah is considered an act of worship, and a person will be rewarded for it.
The Moment of Death: In reference to the holy Qur'an: " let every person consider what they have sent ahead for tomorrow" Qur'an 59:18. When a person dies, the soul leaves the body, and so the physical appearence of the body may not reflect the situation of the soul. The disconnection between the body and the soul signals the biginning of death and the commencement life of Al-Barzakh(The after life). The teachings of the beautiful religion of Islam says death is only the beginning of a journey; the transfer of the soul from one existence to another, it is the collection of the soul.
Allah(God) informed us in the holy Qur'an: "Say! that the Angel of Death that is responsible for you, comes and collect your soul.
The life of Al-Barzakh(the spiritual realm): Al-Barzakh in Islam is the spiritual realm, the metaphysical world, the afterlife, the world of the unseen. The Barzakh life is a life which had a barrier between this world that we live in and the world that is unexplainable to us. It is a type of a certain life with which it own reality and it is nothing like this world nor the hearafter but some where in between. As soon as the human being dies the soul begins to experience the Barzakh world. The barzakh is similar to when you are asleep; it is a temporary station between this world and the hereafter. In the temporary world, a person is able to know if they are going to paradise or hell.
The hadit (Sayings) of the holy prophet Muhammad (s.a.w)said "The grave is the first part of the hereafter,if he or she is saved from punishment and torment of the grave, then whatever is after it is going to be better and easier. If he is not saved from the punishment and the torment of the grave, then whatever is going to come afterwards is hoing to be worse".
In what shape are we presented in Al-Barzakh (The spiritual realm)? Is it the soul or is it the body? How do human being manifest in Alamul Barzakh (the spiritual realm)? The answer is that Allah (swt) create a special body which is immaterial. For example, when you look into the mirrow, you see your own image, and it has no physical attributes to it. That is the best and closest parable that we can give to this particular body, this immaterial existence.
