Ebonyi Militants invasion: IGP orders deployment of armored boats

27 November 2015, 14:08 Daniel Akpu

The Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Solomon Arase has ordered the deployment of armored boats to riverine areas in the boundary of Ebonyi and Cross River States to checkmate activities of hoodlums. Assistant Inspector General of Police(AIG) in charge of Zone Six Calabar, Baba Bolanta disclosed this during a visit to Governor David Umahi at Government House Abakaliki.

AIG Bolanta who was on a familiarization tour of the state explained that the decision by the Police high command to deploy armed boats in the water ways beginning from next rainy season was to ensure that the recent invasion of Afikpo by suspected armed robbers does not re-occur. He regretted the loss of a Police Inspector and Patrol vehicle in the incident and called for the assistance of Ebonyi State government in equipping Marine police to counter any threat to security in riverine areas.

Bolanta also said security has been beefed up at the boundary between Adadama in Cross River State and Ndiagu Amagu Ikwo in Ebonyi state to check incessant clashes between the two communities. The AIG also met with senior officers of the state command and members of Police Community Relations Committee to discuss security matters.

In response, Governor Umahi assured the AIG of his administration’s resolve to support the police in performing their duties noting that security communication equipment as well as surveillance cameras would be installed in the thirteen Council Headquarters in the state to nip crime in the bud.   Chief Umahi pledged that the state government would construct perimeter fencing at Police Divisional Headquarters not yet fenced and commended the Commissioner of Police in the State, Peace Ibekwe Abdallah for being proactive in crime prevention.END//
