Gov. Umahi bows, reverses new tax regime

19 November 2015, 13:09 Daniel Akpu

Following the public outcry and pressure that greeted the Ebonyi state government new tax regime from all quarters, governor David Umahi has directed that all increments in the taxes payable in the state must be reversed immediately.

He said the old rates are to apply in all ministries, Departments and Agencies as well as in every local government areas and Development Centres. Governor Umahi also abolished manifest fee charged on travellers within the state forthwith and urged all commercial vehicles operators to revert to the old transport fares with immediate effect.

He therefore warned those who may be applying force and violence in the collection of rates, fees and levies to desist from it or be punished according to the provisions of the law. He however appealed to the public to rather than resort to violence or force, defaulters should simply be reported to the Board of Internal Revenue, which has the statutory duty to deal with such defaulters. This was contained in a press statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Senator Emmanuel Onwe yesterday in Abakaliki.

According to the Information Commissioner, the governor is fully aware of the painful economic challenges confronting the nation and has resolved to always stand with the people, to share their burdens and to provide relief whenever and wherever it is possible to do so. The state Spokesman said in recognition of the harsh global economic realities and the need to balance it against the imperative need to develop Ebonyi state, Governor Umahi will next year convene an all stakeholders summit to deliberate and determine a general agreeable and acceptable rate of tax increases that can be born comfortably by the citizens.

He said governor Umahi has been alerted to the possibility that some elements in the society have constituted themselves into fake task forces engaged in unauthorized revenue collection and is worried that" such elements are doing nothing but tarnishing and ruining the newly evolving immaculate image of Ebonyi state". "His Excellency condemns them without reservation and directs all law abiding citizens to report such elements to the police or to the Office of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice so that immediate legal and punitive action can be taken against them", the statement added. Recall that governor Umahi had last month announced new tax regime in the state which has earned his government public condemnation.
