Message from the people of Borno to Dasuki

26 May 2016, 10:25 Salamatu Muhammad

The people of Borno have suffered. Blood has been spilled in their land. They have lost their loved ones, they have lost their properties in the hands of some God forsaking, unscrupulous and unpatriotic individuals who are popularly called Boko Haram who are terrorist group that is based in the North Eastern Nigeria.

The activities of the terrorists have caused the people of Borno State an untold hardship since 2009 when the crisis started, many people have died, many have lost their properties, some still traumatized from the horrific experiences from their various villages. Despite the unholy actions of the terrorists, the then administration of Goodluck under which embattle Sambo Dasurki served as National Security Adviser showed a kind of indifference towards taking steps to tackling the crisis, they rather used the crisis as a means to loot public funds and play politics without been mindful of the conditions of the average citizens in Borno State.

During the past administration, the Nigerian army complained that they were under armed, underfunded and under motivated to stand the rigors of the terrorists’ ruthless firepower, therefore, they rather took to their heels at warfronts instead of standing to fight for their country. The reputation of our once courageous gallants, the peace keepers and the once strongest African force has been lost in the eyes of the international community.

The administration used this as a pretext to procure 2 billion dollars arms deal that resulted in the embezzlement of 2 billion dollars through the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of Dasuki. The illegal deal was revealed following an interim report of the presidential investigations committee on arms procurement under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. The committee report showed an extra budgetary spending to about 2.2 billion dollars in the foreign currency component under the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

Many believed Dasuki’s that appointment to that office would bring down the terrorist activities to its knees within not too long of his assumption of office even as no one had given any reason he was thought to have such credentials. Before his appointment, many believed that his predecessor, late Andrew Azazi was not only grossly incompetent to the task, but had interest in the continuity of the crisis as he was alleged to have been part of some very complex and long conspiracy against the North.

Due to this, the coming of Dasuki in office, being a northerner and a royalty for that matter, was received by most people with great joy and optimism.

However, it was an irony that the situation and the crisis only get worse a record -time worst. Losses of lives and properties increased in scale and frequency to such extent that a territory as big as 18 local government areas belonging to Nigeria was lost to the terrorists. Under him it was record for the first time, the terrorist proclaim a state independent of the Nigerian government, Islamic caliphate of Gwoza.

As the condition aggravated, people especially of Borno were left with no other option than to begin to suspect him of complicity but this was only to an extent. It was never doubted that the Nigerian army was under armed, underfunded and under-motivated to stand the rigors of terrorists’ ruthless firepower. But with the unprecedented victory of Muhammadu Buhari as the president in 2015, he was to be arrested by the Nigerian State Security Service (SSS) for allegedly wasting away 2.1 billion dollars meant for fighting Boko-Haram.

He was also accused of awarding phantom contract to purchase military hardware that was never bought what in the first place aside from every other thing, did not fall under the responsibility of his office. His arrest however did not fall under the responsibility of his office. His arrest however did not come to many as surprise.

Here is a man under whose watch the Nigerian army was stripped of its age long reputation. It sunk to an extent where army officers of giant of Africa and the most populous black nation were seen running away from the battlefield barefooted. Thousands of lives have been lost and billions of naira worth of properties destroyed as a result of the persistent bomb blast and organized massacre that went on in the north particularly in Borno State.

It was on this basis that the government of Buhari ordered his arrest. But aside from that, what shocked people the most and particularly from Borno was the revelation of how Dasuki and his cronies, family and friends, carted away with a shared whopping 2.1 billion dollars meant for the purchase of arms. Many rightfully hold that if he has invested in the military, people in the north east would have not lost their sons and daughters so easily on the revelation made, I become quite keen to interface with the victims of this selfishness and greed to hear what messages they have for him. This was even more when Mrs. Dasuki who is from Borno as well was shamelessly weeping to Nigerians to help her beg the federal government and the DSS to release her husband.

I ran into Modu Alhajikura, in the course of my interview, who only said: as long as God is witness to us, I don’t even want to say anything he helplessly broke into tears. He unfortunately refused when I asked him if I should show a picture of his teary eyes to Dasuki in disagreement, he told me of what consequence it will be to a man who is not moved by the floods of blood in Yadinbuni. Indeed at this juncture, I will like to deliver to you the message from the aggrieved people of Borno State.

You need to know that this is not an administration of impunity, this is not a government where unscrupulous and unpatriotic individuals like you can offend the people and go scot free. You need to face the wrath of the law once found guilty for your selfishness that led to the dead of many, that resulted to the lost of properties worth billions of naira and for your selfishness that led to loss of reputation of our gallant armed forces. Indeed the people of Borno State are urging the judiciary and other law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned until justice has been done.

And we, the people of Borno State will keep our fingers on the pulse until we see justice obviously attained. At the same time we will urge president Buhari to get the show on the road and make sure that all other people like him (Sambo Dasuki) has been brought to justice then they will realize that this time around, we mean business.
