Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima is currently standing trial on a 19-count charge bordering on misappropriation of public fund. The said money was a bank loan meant for the repair of the collapsed Gusau Dam and payment of compensation to victims affected by the incident. It would be recalled that the collapse of Gusua Dam resulted in a flooding which washed away farmlands, hundreds of houses, live stock and properties worth billions of naira and didn’t occur without it attendant loss of human lives. Ahmed Sani Yarima diverted a huge sum meant for the repair of a Dam which has caused untold economic hardship to the people who deserved to be duly compensated because their livelihood and existence depended on it. A prompt repair of Gusau Dam would have boosted agricultural production, reduce poverty and huger and improve the living condition of the people.
Ahmed Sani Yarima was elected governor of Zamfara state in 1999. He impunitytr re-elected in 2003 for a second term which ended on 29 May, 2007. The two term governor who currently is a returnee senator of the federal republic of Nigeria became the first Nigeria governor to implement Sharia law in his state, which came into effect on 27 January, 2000. Since adoption of the Islamic Sharia legal system hundreds of Zamfara citizens and residents have been tried and sentenced according to the tenets and provision of Sharia law. People’s wrist and arm have been chopped off for offenses ranging from stealing of goats, bulls, cows, chickens and meager amounts of money. Others have been sentenced to death by stoning for offenses of adultery and fornication while several have been subjected to lashes of whips, not to mention the hundreds more who are currently in incarceration, serving jail terms in prison for trading and consumption of alcohol.
Even when it became clear that Sharia law as was practiced and implemented by Zamfara state government under the leadership of Ahmed Sani Yarima was merely for the poor and helpless citizens, as the rich and political class continued to perpetuate all manners of criminality and atrocities with impunity, the then administration of Yarima was hell bent on carrying on with a law which is yet to bring to book or prosecute the high and mighty in the society, who are obviously above the law. Citizens and resident of Zamfara state who are under the protection of the Nigerian constitution are subjected to Sharia law which is obviously not compatible with democracy. It is a fact that Sharia law is not practicable in a society whose increasing youth population have continued to lay idle as a result of unemployment; illiteracy and underdevelopment and misappropriation of public fund by the same leaders who are supposed to provide job and make policies that should reduce poverty, hunger and improve the quality of living of the people.
It is injustice against the good people of Zamfara state, particularly hundreds of people who have been prosecuted and convicted by Sharia law for Ahmed Sani Yarima, after amputating and chopping off people's arms and wrists for stealing goats and other minor properties, stoning people to death, subjecting hundreds to several lashes of whips and putting people into prison by Sharia law is currently being tried in a conventional court. Justice should not only be done but it should be seen to be done, in view of this, Senator Yarima should be prosecuted and charged accordingly in a Sharia court, using the same Islamic law that he used for the people of the state. Those who kill by the sword must also die by the sword. Senator Yarima must be subjected to Sharia law, the same law he used to kill and maim his people, that is justice!
