Tax and citizen responsibility

12 February 2016, 11:31

One of the core responsibilities of a citizen is to pay tax, and one of the core duties of government is to guarantee the safety of tax proceeds.

Tax is one of the biggest drivers of the economies of developed countries like the United States, Britain, France, Japan, and Australia. Tax plays a great role in the generation of revenue for developed countries. Developed countries use world class taxation to power their world class economic power. Developed countries have technological mastery of tax collection and tax remittance.

Taxation in Nigeria is not yet world class. There is a big tide of corruption on the platform of taxation in Nigeria. There were corrupt practices of the use of illegal or questionable agents for tax collection and tax remittance in some places. Many citizens and businesses avoid the payment of tax. There were cases of the creation of fake tax papers which negates the principle of taxation. There is the corrupt habit of stealing tax proceeds. Many people and businesses are not even taxed by many governments in many places in Nigeria.

Nigeria is classed as a developing country, and world class taxation can help launch Nigeria into the class of developed countries. Good tax system can be used in many ways to empower, power, and expand many economic spheres of Nigeria. Tax proceeds can be judiciously used to the greatest advantage of the people. Tax proceeds can be used to fix the giant infrastructural deficit in Nigeria. Tax proceeds can be used for the repair and maintenance of public infrastructures. Tax proceeds can be used to elevate the living standards of the citizens.

There should be a technological mastery of tax collection and tax remittance in all the economic sectors of Nigeria to make taxation in the country world class. There should be world class policy tools to make people and businesses pay their taxes, and for the tax proceeds to be used responsibly. Tax proceeds should not be used to wage ideological weapons against the people. Tax proceeds should not be used to create political uncertainty.
