10 suspected drug dealers arrested in Kebbi

29 July 2013, 11:02

Kebbi - No fewer than 10 suspected drug dealers were on Sunday arrested by community members and handed over to the Police in Ambursa, Kebbi state.

The sole administrator of Ambursa/Kardi Development Area, Nasiru Nayaya, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that members of the community apprehended and handed the suspects to the police.

He said that the community leaders took the step because they were disturbed by the increase in sales and consumption of illegal drugs by the youth.

"The traditional rulers, religious leaders, prominent personalities and the entire community were involved in the raid on the drug hideouts and open sales points in the market.

"A house-to-house search was conducted and a bag of illegal drugs and seven bags of cannabis were confiscated while no negative incident was recorded.

"We warned and counselled the suspects on the large scale sales of Cannabis and illegal drugs but to no avail because youths were becoming addicts and the raid has been fruitful.

"All security agencies were involved in the raid so as to avoid breakdown of law and order and we have been successful,” he said.

The sole administrator told NAN that it was an unfortunate incident because Ambursa town was fast turning into a notorious centre of drug dealership in the North West.

Nayaya noted that they had no option than to curtail the menace and embark on the raid which, he promised, would be sustained.

He thanked the security agencies and members of the community for their support and understanding.
