12 persons convicted of violating environmetal law

22 January 2013, 13:20 -

Osogbo - An Osogbo Magistrate’s Court on Monday convicted 12 persons for violating environmental law.

The prosecutor, Mr Femi Ogunbamiwo, who is also the state Director of Environment and Sanitation, told the court that the accused persons were apprehended on Jan. 21, dumping refuse indiscriminately on major streets in Osogbo.

He said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Mobile Court Edict, 1994 and Osun State Laws Cap 101 of 2002.

The accused, who were not legally represented at the court, pleaded guilty to the charge and were summarily tried and convicted.

The Magistrate, Mrs. A.O. Ajanaku, who expressed concern over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on streets of the capital, described the act as `disturbing.’

She ordered each of the convicts to pay N2,000 fine to the coffers of the government.

According to the magistrate, the fine will serve as a `wake up’ call to others who indulged in such act.
