Gombe - No fewer than 15 000 persons in Galdamawa community, Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State, are infected with Schistosoma disease, commonly known as bilharzia.
Kennedy Ishaya, the Commissioner for Health, said on Monday in Gombe, that the community was located on a hilly area bordering Gombe and Taraba.
He said that Bilharzhia was a tropical disease caused by schistosoma parasitic worm, usually associated with the passing of blood through urine.
The commissioner said that he and the Mai (Chief) of Kaltungo, Sale Mohammed, had visited the community for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
He said the government had procured drugs worth N6 million for the treatment of those infected by the disease.
