2 killed in Kwara kingship tussle

19 March 2013, 10:08

Kwara - The Kwara Police Command on Monday in Ilorin confirmed the killing of two people over a kingship tussle in Ganmo, Ifedolun Local Government area of the state.

The spokesman of the police command, DSP Femi Fabode, confirmed the killings while speaking with newsmen on the crisis  that rocked the town.

The News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) recalls that two groups  had been laying claim to the Oniganmo stool.

NAN gathered that the crisis began when a faction got wind of a plan to install  and present a third class Staff of Office to a candidate  by the state government.

The ensuing violence, which  erupted on Sunday, led to the death of  the two persons, burning of some buildings  while scores of residents were injured.

Also speaking to newsmen, Issa Bawa, the state Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Development, appealed to residents  of the  community to put  an end to the violence.

He said that government had not installed any occupant to the vacant stool of  Onigamo of Ganmo.

The Commissioner also explained that the state government only upgraded the status of the throne to  third class grade.

He said government was still awaiting  the interpretation of  the Supreme Court’s  judgment on the tussle.
