Lagos - A 39-year-old businessman, Segun Adegelu,
on Friday appeared before an Igbosere Magistrates' Court, Lagos,
charged with N500, 000 theft.
Adegelu, who resides at No. 196A, Isale Eko Ave., Dolphin Estate,
Lagos, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud
and theft to which he has pleaded not guilty.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clifford Ogwu, the accused committed the offences on April 30 at Dolphin Estate.
"The accused obtained N500 000 from the complainant, Paul Ebikhumi, on the pretext of helping him to buy a car.
"He was, however, arrested by the police when he could not get the car or refund the money," Ogwu said.
Ogwu noted that the offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Magistrate, E.
E. Kubenje, granted him bail in the sum of N200 000 with two sureties
in like sum.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on conviction.
The case was adjourned to Oct. 22 for mention.
