4 in police net after alleged failed kidnapping

13 November 2012, 07:20

Lagos - Four suspects are in police net after a man they allegedly kidnapped and demanded N50 million ransom from, escaped from their hideout while they slept and he alerted the police.

Investigations by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday, revealed that two of the suspects, who including a female, were nabbed by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) on Nov. 6 at Lambe, Ogun.

The other two, NAN learnt, were picked up days later at Alagbole, Ogun, near Lagos State.

A reliable police source told NAN that the victim of the incident, who resides on Ajibola Street, Okota, in Lagos, reported the matter to the police after escaping on Oct. 22.

According to the source, the victim (names withheld), said he was about to enter his house on Oct. 21 when he was surrounded by four armed people, who snatched his Acura TL Saloon car and abducted him.

"He was held captive in the car and driven to an unknown destination at gun point, ‘’ the source said, adding: ``His eyes were blindfolded and his legs tied before he was taken to a hideout in another car.’’

The source told NAN that the suspects, thereafter, demanded N50 million ransom from the family of their victim, who, however, escaped the next day through 'a narrow opening'.

"In the course of his escape, he discovered that the hideout was at Lambe area of Ogun," he said.

The source told NAN that the victim later took operatives of SARS, who were in disguise, to the hideout.

He told NAN that they mounted surveillance for three days before they finally arrested the first two suspects, who  included a woman.

"During a follow up, two others were arrested at Alagbole area of Akute, Ogun, and some exhibits were recovered from the suspects," he said.

When contacted the Head of SARS, at the Lagos State Police Command, SP Abba Kyari, confirmed the incident and told NAN that investigation was still in progress.
