47 illegal hawkers arrested in Abuja

05 February 2013, 16:02

Abuja - The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) says it has arrested 47 illegal hawkers, including three foreigners.

Mr Isa Shuaibu, the Director of the board, while parading the hawkers on Tuedsay in Abuja, said the agency would prosecute them accordingly.

He also directed that the foreigners(Nigeriens) be handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) for onward prosecution.

NAN reports that the AEPB had always arrested and confiscated the property of illegal hawkers.

Shaibu, attributed traffic congestion on major highways to illegal trading activities.

Shuaibu noted that the arrested foreigners had undermined the inter-border agreements between Nigeria and other West African Countries.

``We we will not just allow every foreigner who is not permitted to trade in Nigeria come in because it is dangerous.

``There are laws that regulate activities of foreigners in Nigeria and we must strictly respect them.’’

The director gave an assurance that the board would device different strategies to achieve the task of stopping illegal trading in the FCT.

NAN reports that the hawkers picked from different parts of the FCT during AEPB operations, cut across different age grades and gender.
