500 Nigerian deportees arrive Lagos from UK

Lagos - 500 Nigerians have been deported from the United Kingdom and arrived the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos Wednesday morning, Daily Post reports.

Many of them were deported for illegal stay permits. When interviewed, one of them said he was arrested by British police and was not allowed to even take his belongings before being deported. UK government plans to deport 29 000 Nigerians.

The federal government has frowned at the mass deportation, stating that efforts must be made by the UK government to ensure those being deported are really Nigerians, medically fit to travel and have a role to play in the country - meaning they should be able to fit into Nigerian society.

The Nigeria High Commission in London had on Oct. 24 expressed worry over plans by the migration and removal policy of the UK Government, to deport the 29 000 Nigerians.

The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in London, Olukunle Bamgbose, said. “I think about 29,000 Nigerians have been designated to be deported.
