Benin, Jan. 18, 2013 (NAN) Zone RS 5 of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) recorded 526 deaths in 1 204 road accidents within the command in 2012, an official said on Thursday.
Mr Wole Olaniran, the FRSC zonal commander, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.
The zone is made up of Edo, Delta and Anambra states.
Olaniran said the figures were from accidents that occurred between January and November 2012.
He said the commission recorded 973 road accidents in the zone within the same period in 2011.
He said in 2011, 487 persons were killed in accidents, while 2 635 were injured in the crashes involving 1 478 vehicles.
" In 2012, we recorded 526 deaths, 3 120 cases of injured persons with 2 040 vehicles involved in the crashes," the commander said.
He said Edo recorded the highest number of fatalities in both 2011 and 2012 because of its position as a transit state.
He said Edo recorded 510 road crashes in 2011 with 289 deaths, adding that 1 219 vehicles were involved in the accidents.
Olaniran said that in 2012, 797 vehicles were involved. in 433 accidents in Edo, which led to 186 deaths and 1 254 injuries?
He identified the Ore-Benin road, especially at the Ovia River, near Benin as one of the worst spots where accidents occurred.
He said the area recorded 114 road crashes in 2012.
Olaniran identified overloading, over-speeding, burst tyres, dangerous driving and loss of control arising from fatigue as some of the factors responsible for the high rate of accidents in the zone.
He said within the same period, the command apprehended 47 823 traffic offenders involved in 53 580 traffic offences.
Olaniran said that out the offenders, 1 527 were arraigned and prosecuted.
He said as part of the efforts to ensure that "we consolidate on the gains of 2012 in 2013, the FRSC has come up with what we call FRSC corporate goals which all commands must leverage on in their respective commands.
"One is our planned 30 per cent reduction of road traffic crashes and fatality index, empowering the commands to perform better and the improvement of staff welfare.
"Others include planned improvement of our internal communication processes, data collection and analysis, all geared toward improving service delivery to all road users in this 2013."
