31 October 2013, 20:24

Lagos - The Goa government in India has brought 53 Nigerians into custody after the foreign nationals blockaded the Mapusa-Panaji Highway, Business Standard reports.

The unplanned protest came after a Nigerian national was murdered, believed to be in connection with gangs involved in the drug trade. The mob proceeded to rid the police hearse of the mans body. This prompted the police to round up Nigerians living without the necessary visas and work permits, in the area.

According to census data, in January 2012, there were close to 10,000 Nigerians living and working in India however only 3,500 were registered with the Nigerian High Commission and they live in cities such as New Dehli, Mumbai and Chennai.Millions of Nigerians have emigrated to different parts of the world, many fled to Europe, North America and South Africa. It is estimated that over a million Nigerians have emigrated to the United States.
