55 placed under surveillance in Osun over Lassa fever

Osun - 55 people have been placed under surveillance in Osun State after they were suspected to have had contact with the late doctor that died of Lassa fever at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Nation reports.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Temitope Oladele, said none of those under surveillance showed symptoms of the disease.

Oladele assured residents of the state that the state government is putting measures in place to curb the deadly virus in the state.

He said a monitoring room was set up in the Ministry of Health with mobile lines giving out to report any suspicious case and doctors and other health worker have been put on the alert in case of any incident of Lassa fever.

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex confirmed that the doctor who died on Monday after vomiting blood was infected with the dreaded Lassa fever virus.

The chairman of the hospital’s committee on Lassa fever, Adedeji Onayade, confirmed on Wednesday that blood samples sent to a laboratory tested positive to the disease.
