6 Cameroonian human trafficking victims rescued

16 October 2012, 12:10

Katsina - The Nigeria Immigration Service, Katsina State Command, said on Monday that it had rescued six Cameroonians suspected to be victims of human trafficking.

Umar Bulama, the state Controller of Immigration, paraded the suspected victims and their captors  before newsmen in Katsina.

He said the command had arrested a citizen of Niger Republic and a Nigerian, who allegedly facilitated the transportation of the victims.

Bulama said the Cameroonians met at Yola Motor Park where they boarded a vehicle and travelled to Katsina State border on the way to Algeria through Niger Republic.

He said they were rescued in Koza village in Mai’adua Local Government Area of Katsina State, where the driver handed them over to the Nigerian, who was a member of the syndicate.

The controller said they were arrested few kilometres to Niger Republic when the Nigerian was trying to ferry them across the border.

Bulama said the victims were either misled or on invitation to Algeria as one of them had a valid Cameroonian passport while the rest had Cameroonian national identity cards.

He said the victims as well as the driver and the Nigerian and their vehicles  would be handed over to the National Agency for Prohibition and Trafficking in Persons.
