6 injured as suspected thugs attack Akinsola’s supporters

07 July 2014, 06:37

Ibada - Six persons were injured in Ibadan on Saturday evening when some people suspected to be thugs attacked Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, a former transport workers union leader, and his supporters.

Akinsola, popularly known as “Tokyo”, was at the residence of Sheikh Haruna Suara, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, to honour an invitation.
He was, however, rescued by some policemen who took him away in an Armoured Personnel Carrier provided by the Oyo State Police Command.

Akinsola, who is a former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oyo State, later addressed newsmen on the incident.

“I was at the residence of the Chief Imam of Ibadan with some of my supporters to honour an invitation when some people  attempted to kill me.”

“My supporters were attacked while I was being attended to by the Imam in his house at Agbeni area of Ibadan.”

“I thank God that my supporters were outside when I was inside with the Imam. Maybe I would have been dead by now,” he said.

The media reports that Akinsola’s supporters who were injured included Bashiru Saheed, Agboola Rasak, Liadi Akande, Rilwan Akinsola and Alani Adaramola.

Eyewitnesses said no fewer than 20 suspected thugs, who were wielding dangerous weapons, attacked Akinsola’s supporters.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident.

Clet-Ilobanafor said suspected thugs attacked the supporters of Akinsola while on a visit to Suara.

She said the command reacted swiftly to the call for reinforcement by the Mapo Police Station where the incident was reported.

“The command dispatched combined police teams and an Armed Personnel Carrier to the scene of the incident to stop the violence and rescue Akinsola.”

“But we are yet to make any arrest because the scene was very rowdy and we had to stop that first and later make arrests based on identification by witnesses.”

“We have advised those injured to go for treatment and later come back to help us in our investigations aimed at tracking down the culprits.”

“We will get them and make them face the full wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent to others,” she said.
