Nasarawa - Sixty three persons lost their lives in 193 road traffic accidents in Nasarawa State between January 2012 to date, the state FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Francis Udoma, said.
Udoma told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lafia that 49 other persons sustained various degrees of injury.
He attributed the major cause of the accidents to reckless driving, and called on motorists to respect traffic rules and the rights of other road users.
``Driving is a noble profession; as such, people should go to the driving schools and learn how to drive,” he advised.
Udoma also urged the state government to establish driving schools where government drivers and other individuals would be trained in order to reduce accidents on the highways.
He, however, called on motorists to register their vehicles considering the rate of criminal activities perpetrated by motorists, especially commercial motorcycle riders.
He urged motorists to be extra careful while driving, saying that motorists should avoid reckless driving and to always check their vehicles before taking off.
The sector commander said that the command had taken measures, including increased number of officers on road patrols to reduce carnage on the highways.
Udoma also said that the command had commenced a series of activities to sensitise the public on the need to obey traffic rules and regulations to enhance safe driving and reduce accidents.
He reminded drivers that ``life has no duplicate," adding that it therefore became imperative for them to avoid over-speeding and should obey the traffic rules.
